Tyre Wear?

Featured Replies

Dunlop Sport01 225/50/17 fitted at factory.

In doing routine checks today of oil, coolant, washer fluid, tyre pressures etc I also examined each typre all around.

What surprised me was the threadwear after less than 5000 miles.

Nominally the thread depth on this tyre is 10mm new.

Running a gauge today I found them down to 5.5mm to 6mm which kind of shocked me.

I was not a lover of these 'summer tyres' from new and the thread wear seems to be excessive considering the mileage and use; 50/50 motorway/N (A in UK) roads with some country lane driving.

Looks like I'll need to be in the market sooner for more resilient rubber.

Anyone any ideas or comments on this IMHO, excessive wear?

Are you sure it wsas 10mm, I thought most normal road tyres started at 8mm due to stability issues with the rubber blocks if much higher?

Quite possibly wrong though.

If it was 8, you have used about 33% of the life, around 15,000 miles, not too bad.

I have had cars which wore out front tryes in 12000 miles or less, and the Yeti seems to encourage tyre wearing driving!

Doesn't sound bad to me either. I thought most tyres started around 8mm new.

I rarely get more than 10kmiles from a set of fronts on fwd cars. That's just me though. ;)

Not sure where 10mm new comes from but my Dunlop sports came from the factory with 8mm tread. Mine are now down to around 6mm and I've covered 6,200 miles on them. I swap rubber at 3mm depth so I'm hoping to see 13,000 miles from these. Compared to previous cars where I've seen 6,000 miles from a set, I think that's ok

I got the thread depth from Dunlop here but note it is the US site.

Having checked the unused spare the depth is 8mm.

The wear is therefore not as bad as I feared.

I would usually change when thread went below 3mm, though on the Octavia and Octavia II that was normally around 25k km but don't think I'll get 12k km out of these IMHO horrible tyres

I've just put on my winter wheels. After 9,500 miles on the summer Dunlops, I have 5mm on the fronts and 6mm on the rears.

17,000 km on mine, swapped front to rear, as fronts were down to 5 mm and rears 6 mm. Expect to swich to winter boots sometime in the next few weeks.

They don't design for bends in america, so can probably get away with more tread to wear away on their huge journeys at 55mph (yawn)

The thread depth on the referenced site is 10/32", which is very close to 8 mm.

Have you checked the tracking/alignment? Whilst my car doesn't have uneven tyre wear (it is a 2WD by the way), when I took it to my original dealer who persistently could not cure the offset steering since new, the new skoda dealer I am now using in Durham has just done a full wheel alignment, I think they are happy, I have yet to see it as it is still with them, but will report back. It could be a slight adjustment problem from the factory which is not picked up by the dealers??
