170 CR vs 140 CR TDI

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been asked before but the search function on here isn't so easy to find stuff with.

Are the diesel 140 and 170 hp engines the same apart from power and torque outputs, i.e are the internals strengthened in the 170 version or is it just a more aggressive mapping that makes the motor more powerful with no upgrade to the engine and transmission parts?

Reason I'm asking is, if i chip my 140CR Scout (6 speed manual), is it just making it a standard VRS motor really or am I risking breaking something as it's not optimised for the increased output.

cheers, Alan.

I'm not sure about the internals or block, but the turbo is different (or was on the PD engines).....as to the rest of the engine/transmission, somebody else will have to chime in on that one (I'm guessing the transmission is the same).

Transmission is exactly the same, the physical engine block is the same. Differences will be, the turbo (will be smaller) and most likely the cooling system will be slightly different

Getting a remap will not harm your engine - as long as you get a good remap. they are set well within the manufacturers tolerances, and I imagine you wont be flogging it around all the time :giggle:

Different injectors too I believe...

What about the new VW engine

Bi TDi 180 PS

Twin Turbo Common Rail - I believe

Still only found on the Vans - hope it makes it to the VAG cars

I'd like a bit more than 180PS out of a Twin Turbo... 200 anyone :D

200 will be easy, the 170 produces between 180 and 192 as standard

bmw have the twin turbo 2.0 and it produces 201 or there abouts. Perhaps the actual figure is nearer 215/220

There was talk of VAG doing one.

I'd like to see it.

180 and 192? is this documented anywhere?

Why would VW (or BMW) understate the power output?

Its well known, its also why remap figures look amazing for the remap of a 170.

Both Revo and Superchips have stock graphs that show as standard that the 170 punches out a lot more.

Why do VAG underestimate? Not really sure, perhaps to get the cars in a lower CO2 band or insurance bracket.

I read somewhere in some Business Week article that German Cars must produce within a 2% difference from the published figures.

Now i'm not sure if this is true, it doesnt seem like it when the hike has been a lot more.

Its not just soot chuckers either, its petrol cars and other manufacturers.
