Fabia 1.6 CR TDI 90bhp appalling fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Just as an aside:- I have the Octavia Greenline II estate which has the same engine and is currently averaging 66mpg. I have noticed that on my daily commute the car makes the best mpg in the last third of the journey. First third the OBC reports under 50mpg, by the 2/3s mark it's about 60mpg and by the end (depending on traffic) is between 64-70mpg. This is a journey of about 40ish motorway miles. This suggests to me even if driven at a constant reasonable speed the Greenlines aren't going to get any where near it's reported mpg if driven for distances under 20 miles.

I thought the Octavia Greenline II had a 1.6 4-cylinder engine. My Fabia Greenline II has a 1.2 3-cylinder engine.

But I have noticed the same. It takes a long time to fully warm up - especially in winter. Even after the 'blue light' goes out (after 4km in winter), the fuel consumption continues to improve. This is also shown up in the handbook, which advices:

The engine reaches its operating temperature (outside temperature and engine dependent) only after about 4 to 10 kilometres and the fuel consumption then stabilizes. You should therefore avoid driving short distances whenever possible.

Cruising at 55-65mph on the motorway is almost dangerous...unless you're an HGV.

Cruising at 55-65mph on the motorway is almost dangerous...unless you're an HGV.

Why?

Do you not have the ability to see cars at that speed? (I don't travel at those speeds BTW)

I cruise at 55-70 perfect in slow lane ? Why is it dangerous ?

Igloo, kinetic energy is how much energy is stored in the vehicles motion. It's why braking distances increase quickly as you go up in speed, but it's not the reason for more fuel use as kinetic energy is just stored and returned like a flywheel.

It is mainly wind resistance and the force (torque) to beat that also squares with speed. This is a constant loss and the faster you go the bigger the loss.

But over a set distance if you were to drive at double the speed, the power required is 8x as power to beat wind resistance is velcocity cubed.

The torque (and driving force at the wheels) is four times and the work done is four times.

But because engines are generally more efficient at higher load your fuel used will never be as high as four times.

Well I've gone and done it ! I've just filled up at a morrisons £1.40 per litre for diesel :( I've always used vpower and that's 1.56 per litre, I put in 50 litres saving £7.50 on fill so will be cheaper but I fear I will get more dpf regens and less mpg per litre ?

Look out Seb, she's gonna blow!!!... :giggle::hi:

You think ? Don't say that Estateman

I'd like to see you try to go faster on the M6/M62 towards Manchester in rush hour - that's mainly the speed of "going with the flow"

I've used Morrisons and Sainsbury's diesel and I have noticed only a regen a couple of times in 24k miles. I've also used Shell Fuel saver as test and didn't notice any difference.

Good so I will keep using , I must say though she sounds a little quieter on morrisons stuff ? Placebo ?

Be interesting to see what you get and your impressions.

Yeah mike as I've always run vpower in my vehicles,I've always thought/ think its better for the car not POWERRRRR. But keeping the engines fuel system clean and a healthier cleaner burn? However I do put BG244 in as well every 12 months or 10 k smiles :), so I might be overdoing it a bit :) I'm a bit ( some say ) of a prat when it comes to the car ? , so I've done 1/4 tank now with no ill feelings that's roughly 150 miles on the forecourt crap :) , as I've said earlier she does sound as rattlie in the lower rpm in a higher gear( if that makes sense) the pd engine was fine at lower rpm in lower gears , however the cr engine isn't ( long geared) so I will see how she gets on, although I'm tempted to chuck vpower in again :) , diesel here is now £144.9 and about 12p litre more for vpower :(

Winter just now and lower ambient temps,

the Diesel in the filling stations will be Winter Grade Diesel, as good quality above minimum standard as it is all year probably.

BP tanker drivers in Scotland about to strike, so lets see if that effect other Oil Companies prices here or further afield.

  • 4 years later...

Been an interesting read this... As I've posted in another post we have just bought a 73k 2010 fabia with the 1.6 crtdi 90 engine and we think it's not as good as we thought it would be on mpg
