Sport Maxx, GT, TT or Eagle or other

Featured Replies

Passenger front OE Sport Maxx down to wear blocks (13,000 miles) which tyres to go for?

Do not seem to be able to find Sports Maxx in GT spec, only available in 235 and above of tyre dealers I have seen.

Ordinary Maxx and GT and TT spec seem to get OK reviews, Goodyear Eagle gets some better reviews and is about the same price £120-130 fitted etc.

Got a 18 inch Neptune rim as spare now, fits in boot with tyre on ie Sport Maxx but is the Conti, Michelin worth the extra £50-70?

Ordinary Sports Maxx is only traction A and not AA. Load rating is 88 and not 92 but since max axle weight is 500 Kgs and tyre rated at 565 Kgs I recall then OK.

Can use tyre for TSI VRS steel spare ie 205/55 16 V rated on my Oct Est, lucky that.

Tyres, most important feature, world of confusion and disagreement, any informed and reasoned logic in this area?

think I saw these for a bit under £150 but tyre review reckoned quite high wear rate ie less than 10K. Your experience with wear on the front with them?

Paid £140 for mine - it is on the rear though - the other 3 are sport contact 2 - got 8500 on the clock now and they are around 50% worn i'd say. Definately not less than 10k! I don't hang about either ;)

Ta, Contis have come top on a lot of tests but when the hold the test at the Conti track it is a bit unfair on the others. I tend to replace at around 2-3 mm as wet braking seriously tails off after this point. Cops, Dept Trans etc cars do this (on our taxes). Stick it in the boot or on the back for a while when it gets down to 3 or 4 mm if I get there quick enough.

God saves us when VAT goes to 20%

Vredestein sessantas are really good and well thought of on this forum, £100 each, good in the wet

Thanks for the recommendation. Dutch company I see with Malaysian production. Vredestein Unltra Cento came 7th out of 12th in the recent Autexpress test but it was not bad in most area although curved aquaplaning looked a bit low at 85% of Michelin. Autoexpress managed to buy that Vredestein for £100 but the Michelin for £106 and the Dunlop Sport Maxx TT for £91. Where I wonder?

The Sessantas looks assemetric in such a way that it would olny work well on one side of the car in very wet conditions. Do you only keep them on one side of the car?

Just bought one new Neptune rim and tyre ie Dunlop Sports Maxx, which only looks slightly like it would one work best on one side.

My front tyres Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's are nearly worn out in 7000 miles...This is shocking..DONT BUY ANY MORE!!!!

....and I dont drive it like I stole it either!!!!

In the Spring .....I'll be getting a pair!!

I'd say avoid the "regular" sport maxx's - i had these on my gti and they were aweful - like having a block of concrete instead of a tyre.

i ran my gti after that exclusively on eagle f1s - great but ready for the bin at 3mm.

my vrs came with sportcontact2's from the factory - i'm due a change soon (21k miles) and aim to go for sportcontact3's this time.

HTH.

All round! yes you would think it would pull to one side when you brake but it is fine

Are you a member of Costco? If so you could get Michelin's for a good price... (as well as countless other stuff). Got Dunlops SMaxx on my Jag although they are like rocking horse poop to find at the mo so switching to Toyo T1R Proxes, but found they are a good tyre. Had Michelin Pilot Sports and Pilot Primacys on previous cars, both a very grippy tyre, but they are a slightly softer compound. I think I've got Contis on Octy (not yet collected) but will see how they are and switch to Michelin when the time comes...

You generally need to be a teacher/doctor/lawyer/military etc for membership, but worth giving them a ring...

i just recently bought the contis as well , managed to get them them for £117 each fitted, after searching through loads of reviews and tyre tests the contis were always in the top 3 , have them fitted now and im impressed good all round tyre, cant comment on wear yet. i considered the ultra sessantas but was put off by people saying how much there mpg had gone down with them fitted.

Thanks everyone.

It does seem that Contis and Michelins are always come up in the top 3 in nearly all surveys.

Just need to try and get them at a reasonable price say no more than £150 fitted and of course tey are 18 inch hoops on the FL VRS.

Be interested to see what the 17 inch on my 1.8 TSI DSG L&K come with, hopefully Contis.

Thanks all contributors

last time i looked i think conti 3's were 127 quid each - cant remember if that was mytyres or camskill but it will be one of those two..
