Diesel cold start problems

Featured Replies

Last weekend I changed the oil and filters in my Ambient estate 1.9tdi 90bhp. Ever since on a cold morning start it doesn't start on the first turn of the key. I bought the car back in May and it has never failed to start straight away. I didn't think there is anything I could have done wrong when servicing the car. It might just be coincidental that the provlem is since the service as this week has been the first cold mornings since owning the car. The battery was replaced last month, so I can rule that out. I was thinking maybe glow plugs? The car runs perfectly, so the only problem is having to turn the key twice to start and give it a little bit of accelerator.

The filters I used when servicing were genuine from the Skoda dealer, and the oil was the best I could get, Mobile One ESP.

Did you change the fuel filter?

If you did maybe got a bit of air in and not bled properly? Or pipes not tight on?

Could also be just bad luck with one glowplug down, coincidentally breaking at the same time of the oil change.

To be honest my 90hp is abit tempramental, sometimes starts on the button sometimes not (first time in morning) , regardless of outside air temp.

I was a but too nervous to change the fuel filter. I have been told it is a bit harder on a diesel.

I think I might get the glow plugs replaced. Does anyone know if it is a difficult job?

I've heard that dirty oil will always start a car better than new oil. Don't know why but heard that rumour a few times!

Old oil is thinner than new oil, could be your starter or battery. May sound daft but it's a lot harder stirring thick liquid than thin.

Diesel Fuel Filter is easier than the glow plugs , Get a Genuin one though , ive tried others and they end up leaking . all you need is a philips scredriver and pliers for the little clip .

And remember to ensure the drainage screw is tight on the bottom, plus fill the filter with fuel, otherwise you could flatten the battery cranking it over trying to get it to start as it refills the filter first (no priming feature  )
