When you say you've checked the wheels, did you jack it up and see if it wobbles? If it's generally loose it might be a bearing, and if it only moves in the direction it steers check the track rod ends are tight. Is the noise definitely coming from the wheels, or something central?

have you checked to see if there is a stone in the brakeshoes/calipers.

I recall a few posts here about this recently with even RAC men saying what a common problem it is

And are your wheel bolts on tight :S

Check the drive shaft and CV joint......if thats OK maybe an engine or gearbox mounting has failed.

Is the banging twice as fast at 10MPH than at 5MPH?

Does it make the noise if you coast (clutch fully depressed)?

What about at full lock - right and left?

If it doesn't happen when coasting, I'm pretty sure you're looking at gearbox/diff. Does it happen in reverse? Oh, and I 8 txt spk.

get like a pry bar or something and stick it down your engine and place it on the top of the gear box, place your ear against the top of the pry bar and you will be able to hear and nasty sounds through it... easy way to see if a bearing has gone somewhere or something
