steering noise

Featured Replies

Five days ago my fault free Fabia developed a noise while steering 3/4 to full lock at walking speeds. Sort of like a grinding groaning noise. Took it down to the dealers for the mechanic to check out, naturally the noise didnt happen while he drove the car. In fact it disappeared completely till the next day. since then it has appeared/disappeared at unsuitable **** me off intervals. The mechanic said it was probably a stone caught in the back plate of the disc/hub. This seemed feasable enough. I JUST WANT THE BLOODY noise!!!.....the rest is unprintable, to stay long enough for the mechanic to hear it...

My son in law had the same problem with his Mk II Fabia Sport.

It was eventually found to be incorrectly seated front spring/s.

Now cured.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Today it only creaked and groaned for half a day.

does sound like a stone caught between the discs, used to happen to me quite a lot as the carpark at work was gravel biggest worry that it may damage ,score the discemoticon-0106-crying.gif

If stone in the disc is suspected try this.

As soon as you hear it, find an open area, say car park and reverse briskly and apply the brakes.

This has worked for me in the past.

Failing that it's a wheel off job and poke about with a slim screwdriver.

I had a simiar noise with my fabia 3 - turned out to be the tyres rubbing on the rims and making a kind of grinding noise.

Apparantly it only seems to happen with Continental tyres - had exactly the same problem a few years ago with a Fiesta.

Fix is to smear some silicone grease or similar on the wheel at the point where the tyre wall meets the wheel - do both sides of the tyre mind and on both wheels. Hope this helps you get to the bottom of your problem.

I had this same problem too, but it was worse the more you chucked it around corners. Worth a try if you have some silicone grease lying around (if you don't you should anyway... is awesome sauce) Don't use anything that will eat the rubber, stick to silicone based lubes

I agree with the guys...it's most likely to be a tyre noise, not a stone. The silicone grease will fix it and prove one way or the other whether it's that. A stone in the calipher is there all the time usually, but tyre noise is dependant on various factors. Just one other thing I will mention...a stone can get trapped under a front strut suspension spring. This also can make a grinding noise and, unlike a stone trapped in the disc calipher, can vary in intensity and when it occurs. Post back with your findings when you can...and good luck.
