Featured Replies

[my fabia seems to be using oil quite fast its only done 25000 miles any ideas. also what oil do i need to put in it? cheers for any help

Tom

You don't say how old it is, but lots of short journeys is much worse for wear on a car's engine than a higher mileage with fewer starts and stops ie. running warm for longer.

When you say it's using a lot of oil - how much is a lot? 1l every 500 miles, 5000 miles, 10,000 miles?

I use Fuchs fully synthetic stuff - same "weight" as VAG uses (forgotten 5W40?) on a BBY engine, you really need to check the oil level a bit more frequently - I would only ever expect to add in 0.5 litre as the sump capacity is only 3.25(or 3.50) litres. Also you would really need to get the dipstick level to a known point and then only ever top it back up to that point - if you are to accurately gauge the oil usage.

Do a thorough complete clean of the crankcase breather system - you will be amazed what it can do for your oil consumption!!

If only I had a fiver for every time I've said this..........................

1.4 16v engines seem to be uber sensitive to a dirty breather system.

1 litre in 2,500 miles is absolutely nothing. Top up and don't worry about it :)
