Strange performance

Featured Replies

Right guys, hope someone can shed some light on this for me

On the motorway, sitting at about 60-65 put the foot down to overtake, car got to 70 and refused to go any quicker! Dropped it a cog and still refused to go. Engine didnt even rev freely when I dipped the clutch. No lights on the dash lights or smoke etc either :(

So I pulled over, left the car running and had a look underneath, at the exhaust, opened the bonnet for a look and checked the pipework. All seemed fine with no leaks etc. Switched the engine off, left for a few seconds and turned back on again. Revved the car without any problems, accelerated away and the car pulled like a train through all the gears with no issues!?!?!?!?

Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what happened? It's not done it since but would be nice to know what caused it.

Cheers :D

what RPM was this, might have been in limp mode?

That's what I thought but surely the dash would of lit up like a baboon's ar$e? Was about 2.5k rpm if I remember correctly.

What could of caused it though?

You'll need a scan. maybe a throttle sensor?

Again would that not have thrown up a light? Cars running perfectly now

hello we had something like this and it was a small stone that had fallen behind the pedal and stopped it from moving fully when it was pushed stone removed and car back to normal.

Had my TDI go in to limp home with no light on the dash - when Mike H scanned it it had registered a turbo over boost or something similar. Turning engine off and back on again put it back to normal. Ended up getting the turbo replaced under warranty as the vanes were sticking.

My 2.0FSi used to go into limp mode much too easily, especially when back seats and boot loaded. The "slippery road" light used to come on as well as the lettering (ESP ? Can't remember.)

Before I got to have it looked at I traded it in so it became SEP. But it was very noticeable that is was when back-end heavy. When I got to know what was happening I used to quickly flick off the ignition then on again. (If on a safe stretch of road). Then it went immediately back to normal.

when my turbo was on the way out, it went into limp mode with no lights, turned out the vanes needed a quick clean. Although as I had a full waranty at the time they replaced the full turbo

Hmmmm so it sounds like sticky vanes on the turbo then. I'll get it scanned and see if anything shows up. Got a years warranty when I bought the car so I've plenty of warranty left

I've had similar probs to the original postee for a while now.

Loss of pwr, wont rev past 25,000... def going into limp mode. If I turn the ignition off then straight back on again it clears.

Yesterday I got a fault light up (Eng Mgt) took it to a mechanic who put a plugged a VAG computer into it and the fault number P 0234 came up (Overboosting).

Now I need to work out if I actually need to get another turbo or if the insides can be cleaned up.

Hey ho... more money down the drain.

It's now been about a week since it happened, no engine management lights or has it lost power etc. Could it have cleared itself out, or is it just delaying the inevitable? :(

Is it possible/easy to "unstick" the vanes on the turbo or is it a new unit?

bloody cars eh

it could potentially have cleaned itself from an "italian tune up" if you have had one of those recently....

Right lost me lol "italian tuneup"? Lol

Sorry I'm a bit tired so brain ain't workin too well lol

Find a nice empty road and...SPANK IT! :D:thumbup:. Think giving your nose a good hard blow to clear it! ;)

Ah ha :D get you now

Done that lol probably that's why it's running alot smoother lol

Have a friend who used to be a mechanic in the Redhill/Reigate area. Said when any car came in a bit sluggish, first thing they did was screech it flat out up Reigste hills a few times. Transformed it !!

glad it worked lol. Always let your turbo cool after mind!

Not worked out unfortunately :( doing it more an more now so it's booked into Skoda for their verdict.......hope the warranty covers it. Turbo has developed a very high pitched squeal after the initial spool so im fearing the worst guys

Always let the turbo warm up/cool down, had a good few turbo'd cars lol

Will update when I find out what the hell's wrong with it

Haven't read all of the above so apologies if something has been repeated.

The screeching/howling noise along with frequent limp mode occurrences normally points to the turbo about to pop its clogs.

Overboosting is usually caused by sticky or jammed VNT vanes.

If the car is under warranty it will cover it provided nothing has been modded.

checked the warranty and it SHOULD be replaced as its a standard untouched part

here's hoping it honoured....................

Quick update.........................

Turbo has been confirmed as goosed

BUT

The warranty company WILL pay for the new turbo and fitting  Car's in on Monday so she'll be as good as new again

Think it would be cheeky to ask for the knackered turbo back? ;)

New turbo fitted today and the car feels superb! Tried to get my old turbo back but there was a sur charge of 240 quid, so I decided against it lol

Is there a "bedding in" time for a turbo, ie careful driving, not over x amount of revs etc?

:D

just slightly off topic but i've been told by a friend that i should always let the turbo warm up before and cool down after a drive, what does he mean? lol :p

i always wait for the engine to get up to temp before any excessive acceleration, but to cool down is it enough to just drive sensibly for the last few minutes of the journey, or should i sit in it on tick over for a few minutes?

cheers

You let it tick over for about 30seconds or so before switching it off after a spirited drive lol I ALWAYS let the car warm up and cool down ;)
