Columbus - Hissing?

Featured Replies

Ello!

Got my Superb (estate) last week and so far it is (mostly) brilliant!

I just realized this evening that when I turn the Columbus unit on it makes a rather loud hissing sound (independant of the following factors: vol muted/radio mode/sat mode/aux-mode/SD-mode/HDD mode). It starts the second I switch the Columbus unit on and stops immediately when I turn it off ... Tried to reset the Audio/Media-settings back to "factory-mode" to no awail.

A few hours back I washed the car (for the first time) by the use of a high-pressure washer (kärscher). I kept the nozzle a minimum of 50-70 cm away from the car at all times; but might water have penetrated somewhere and affecting the grounding-wires or something?

Anyone seen this before? Suggestions?

Kind regards,

Thnp

Doo you have the upgraded sound system?

Yep

its possible your columbus has not been coded correctly, in that it is not aware of the sound system. That in itself will mean that the amp is getting a higher level input than required, the headunit should be configured so that the speaker terminals work as line outputs rather than speaker level.

Thanks for the reply. Any way I can check it myself or is it a dealer issue?

Went back to the dealer today. Mech found nothing wrong. Then I got to listen to another Superb's stereo (also Columbus+upgraded sound) and it was exactly like mine! Can't say I'm too impressed with the system if it's actually supposed to be like this.

The "hissing" is (to me) very apparent and coming from every speaker. Estimating the loudness to be "average whispering" (between people) from a few yards away. When I get my iPhone back from repair in a few days I'll use dB-monitor-software to get an accurate reading of the noise.

Dissapointed regards

I have the Columbus and 12 speaker combo in the yeti and it's silent under the conditions you describe (just tried it!) - I don't see why yours should be any different tbh!

Could it be that you have far better hearing than the average person?

The hearing test I have at works shows that I can hear over a wider range than your average person.

Well it might be my age (I'm only 24) but my hearing (according to test in relation to my work) is quite average. The hissing is actually quite pronounced, but only when the engine is off. Turn the engine on and the hissing disappears between all the bells & whistles of the engine.

But even if you can't pick out the hissing it will still of course meddle & muddle with the sound. Especially in my case since I listen to quite a lot of classical music.

Tried to listen to Rachmaninov 3 today in the car while stationary but had to turn it off after a few minutes due to the hissing really ****ing me off ... Constant white noise at 20/30% of the volume of the piano is annoying!

*Rant complete*

Guess I'll have to learn how to live with it ...

Cheers,

TH

Don't live with it, it's not right. Throw your teddy out the pram and get it fixed, It should not hiss

Well, I've got the Columbus unit with the upgraded sound system in my estate and I don't get a hissing noise at all. I would suggest your car goes back to the dealer or another dealer for a proper check!
