1.2 TSi - down the road

Featured Replies

Just under 10K miles and 11 months old now for my manual 1.2 TSi SE.

I find the engine generally OK. It is lacking a bit on the open road, but is a marked improvement on the petrol 1.6 unit in the qashqai it replaced.

The fuel economy is slightly disappointing at low 30's urban and little more the 40 extra urban, but given the size/shape of the car is only to be expected.

It is however a quite refined unit and the car as a whole is remarkably refined on the motorway at 70 mph in 6th.

I have considered swapping to a 1.8 TSi Yeti, but given their relative rarity haven't managed to find one yet.

I'm on the whole fairly happy with the car. That being said I probably wouldn't consider another 1.2 TSi in anything larger than a fabia though (I expect the 1.8 TSi Yeti is great fun to drive, if thirstier!!).

I actually drove a 1.8 TSi Superb yesterday and was impressed with both the refinement and performance of the engine.

The 1.2TSI was first fitted to the Yeti then latter to other VAG products. The engine is built by Skoda and possibly designed by them It's not the same as the 1.4TSI. The 1.2 has 8 valves and also fairly unique in having a electrically actuated turbo wastegate, further unlike some versions of the 1.4 theres no supercharger either.

Bit confused here. I thought the 1.2 TSi has both a turbo and super charger. Have been told by two Skoda dealers.

Hi,

can defiantly confirm the 1.2TSI is only turbocharged, as is the 1.4TSI 122 also fitted to the Yeti. Only the high output 1.4TSI's as in the Fabia II vRS have both a turbo and a supercharger (belt driven).

I can only agree with the previous posts. I have 5 months and (only) 5k miles on the clock of a 1.2 TSI DSG YETI, but I am still very pleased with the day-to-day performance of the car. The fuel economy for us is not that impressive, I'm getting around 40 MPG on for the full tank, but on longer A-road stretches with speeds of 55 MPH or below I can get up towards 45MPG. We are mostly running 7 miles commuting to work so mostly short runs, so the fuel economy is still quite reasonable. I have not had basically any oil consumtion at all, I once added a few drops of oil just for the sake of it.

I have been towing a boat (was OK, but if I was to do more of towing I would be getting a diesel, but the occasional tow is OK), but mostly driving solo or with the family (2 adults+2 kids under 3), and for our use the engine is more than adequate. The DSG does a very good job of providing me with the correct gear for the situation at hand, and I always feel that I have the power available that I need. In D the gearbox is somewhat reluctant to get really low gears for maximum power output during heavy acceleration, but if you really want revs you can switch manually or use the S mode. On the other hand, I have not done any comparisons if the torque on higher gears provide better acceleration than revving the engine on lower gears...

All in all I am very pleased with this engine, and would not hesitate to buy this combination again.

Its awesome even as a 1.2, i love it and regularly carry lots of cargo in it and the engine still performs fantastically!.

But hey i dont want too many people to own the Yeti, so............ yeah its probably not powerful enough :giggle:

Best buy a quashqai of something ;)
