Winter tyres are for softies..................discuss

Featured Replies

Have caved in and bought winters for the Octy -- plan was not to drive it in the cold weather but i've a problem with the BM now and the Golf is still in pieces, still not put it fully back together again yet. All 3 cars with winters now. Paid a premium for the octy though buying at this time of year. Have gone for steelies from mytyres (bought the other cars tyres from them over the past couple of years found them to be ace).

16" steelies, ET50 offset, have gone for the auto car winter tyre test winners, Goodyear Ultragrip 7+s. just under £600 delivered. Wonder if they'll arrive before xmas!

Biiiiig difference from the £252 all round Bridgestone Blizzak LM18s i paid for the golf :-) About the same price as tyres in the 18x40x225 size for OEM wheels, but there were no brands i fancied in that size.

Hoping the higher profile tyres on steelies will be less susceptible to potholes too!

The winters are doing well in the snow and slush, but even they are not much help of the polished ice at junctions and you have to be very careful.

Nokian Hakka 7 next?

Been driving round on my 245/40 profile tyres in the snow and had zero problems. I was working in the Birmingham area over the weekend and came across quite a bit of snow. No probs :) who need silly, skinny tyres :D

Now just look at this nice little ice road pile-up!

And I presume the FWD Ford Fusion that missed it all did have winter tyres on. THIS is why I laugh at people going on about how they get everywhere they need to in the snow on their summer tyres. All fine well going slow but hit the brakes in an emergency and what you see above is all you'll get: a lovely nice slow uncontrolable slide.

Two arrivals here this morning.

A fairly large dumping of overnight snow, and a tin of 'Liquid Tyre Chains'.

Today you can call me the resident Guinea Pig' if you so wish, and I'll report back later with my conclusions....hopefully. :D

Well at present i am not a member of the softies club, but purely for financial reasons ie i dont have £600 to spare, but i will defo get a set of steelies with winter rubber on them before next winter. It just makes total sense to use all available measures to ensure YOUR OWN PERSONAL safety.

Mickey Rourke was quite good looking in those days. Only Robert De Nero's silly long nails spoilt it really :D

Well before or after hes not really my type :D

He went a bit bonkersand tried to make it as a professional boxer and you can see the results now

shame really he did some good films

particularly the one with Kim Bassinger....... ;)

ERM maybe a daft question but WTF is a tin of "Liquid Tyre Chains"

I came across a man the other day who was struggling to get out of his driveway. Slightly uphill, flat out in first gear and he couldn't quite make it in his diesel Vectra. After 10 minutes watching, his wife asked me if I could give the car a push. I offered to drive it out for him (the car was quite warm by then) and tried it in first gear and got stuck, I dropped back a bit and got it out of his drive using second gear and no throttle.

I tried to explain the technique of gentle with the controls, only to hear him 5 minutes later wheel spinning up the road bouncing off the rev limiter.

Would snow tyres have made a difference in this case, faced with this level of misunderstanding about driving on snow/ice? I'm of the opinion that they do make a difference but you need to be aware of the conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. I do intend to get a set for next year.

You're too nice a chap fordfan. A few years ago i got upset waiting for someone to park. I had a job interview that i was nervous about being late for so after about 5 mins and 15 failed attempts i got out and offered to park it for him, he went bright red but agreed. I kept it bouncing off the rev limiter the full time and slipped the clutch all the way to an exaggerated slow but neat parallel park.

I don't think he even got the hint... :-( and my suit smelled of burnt clutch all through the interview.

Didn't get the job either. Karma? :giggle:
