vRS Daytime Running Lamps

Featured Replies

I refer to the European Commission Directive that dedicated daytime running lights (DRL) are to be fitted to passenger cars (and small delivery vans) from February 2011 onwards.

I recently used the Skoda Car Configurator to make up a specimen vRS Hatch. Under Standard Equipment is "LED front fog and daylight running lights", although only "LED daylight running lights" are mentioned on page 11 of the UK 8/10 brochure.

What happens to the DRLs at night? Do they go off when the headlights are switched on? Or, do the DRL LEDs stay on as fog lights?

However, in the latter situation, would they not be too bright at night, other than in dense fog?

Can an owner of a new (2010) Fabia vRS Hatch please comment.

A thought. When wll these lights be made compulsory to use in the UK? Front seat belts were fitted from 1965 but only compulsory to use (in the UK) in 1983, some 18 years. So, perhaps the DRLs will not be compulsory in the UK until 2029!

Most new cars won't have LED DRLs - they will either use a dipped main beam (like most current VW Golfs) or have an extra bulb if they are dual xenon (xenons cannot run at the reduced voltage so you need an extra fluorescent bulb or an LED array).

The DRLs either dim or switch off completely with the headlamps and foglamps. On Audis (where they are close to the indicators) they also dim when the indicators are used.

As far as I know ,the DRL's remain on ALL the time.

I have to say , I have been flashed by many vehicles, particularly lorries since I've had this car. There's sod all I can do about it.

I had an an old vRS previously, and whenever I had my fog lights on, this seemed to annoy lorry drivers!

Guess they'll all have to lump it :giggle:

I have a facelift Fabia with non-LED DRL's so can comment on them (thanks to info provides on this forum - what a place!).

My DRL's come on when I turn the ignition on. When I flick the light switch to side or dipped beams, the DRL's go out. Simple as that. You notice the Citroen DS3's with the nice vertical LED DRL's? They also go out when the side/dipped lights are turned on. Not sure why Audi keep them on all the time but there you go.

There is an old chap that lives near me and he goes crazy when he sees me with the DRL's on - pointing, flashing, waving his arms! Goodness knows what he would think if I had a Vrs with LED DRL's!

I think I would have to stop and 'educate' the old duffer!

the Audi DRL's still dim down, like they do if you ever see one indicating, which i a rare occurance :giggle:

As above Audi's with the LED strip through the main light fitting dim individually when the indicator is on or the lights are turned on, as do most VAG cars with LED DRL. Those with a regular bulb switch off. The ones you see with a regular bulb that are in the main light fitting are like a lower powered main beam with a direct throw of the beam but the reflector tends to make it more intense without throwing the light straight out like a main beam lights the road.................... if that makes sense?????

PS I think DRL's should be fitted as standard, many people I see driving around do not have a clue how to use their lights!

Do late model VRS's have front fog function on their light switch?

I must admit i like DRL`s but i do think they are in a bad place on the Fabia vRS they do look just like you have your fog lights on during the day which is a BIG pet hate of mine, much better IMO to have them similar

to were they are on the Octavia vRS they look really good there.

OK. We have a new Fabia II vRS

The DRL's are a total replacement for Fog Lights

..ie there are no fog lights...There is no switch for front Fog Lights... Only the rear one

When using parking lights or headlights, these DRL's dim.

On the continent purchasers are given the choice between DRL's or Foglights BUT not in the UK (DRL's ONLY)

You can of course turn them off, whip the front off the fusebox to the right of the steering wheel & there is a switch.

I was parking the VRS the other day & an old dear approached me & said "do you know your fog lights are on?" when I told her that would be a miracle as there aren't any fitted on the car & explained what DRLs are she walked away says "well you learn something everyday".... :giggle:
