If you have a full main dealer service history, then you might get somewhere if they were supposed to check it at the last service.

TBH, if I buy an older car, then I tend to price a new cambelt into the price as I never trust the things.

Hope you don't get too big a bill, but if it's a derv then I'd be rather certain of nasty metal on metal contact :(

It's a petrol, Cambelt was changed in January when the car was bought. It has now been investigated and it wasn't to blame. The variable valve timing went to pot, the top pulley broke causing the Cambelt to break causing mass chaos...I'm pretty gutted, garage isn't interested or the finance co as it happened after the reasonable time of 6 months. Pretty peed off but hey ho, now just gonna make sure I'm sitting down for the bill...

Hate reading these posts. Feel for you. Wonder what the bill will be?

I had the belt done on the wifes D5 at 96k, 2k ago.

be cheaper to buy a second hand engine from salvage will be alot cheaper

I do agree that a second hand engine and checking those parts are in good nick, would be better on costs.

this might seem a stupid comment and I'm full of them but..........

...............was the top pulley part of the cambelt change? I only say that as I'm sure I've read on the MG forums that the rover 2.5 engine should have the pulleys changed at the same time and its one of the main causes for failure.

Of course I could have got it totally wrong, might be worth poping along to a volvo forum and asking a few questions and see if its a common issue?

Feel sorry for you and nothing worse when the car is on finace and your left paying for basically a very large paper weight!
