Foggy windows

Featured Replies

So I got these two rechargable dehumidifiers and using the two in the car ive had no fog or ice on the inside of the car, however its been getting "warmer" the past week up from freezing to a skin burning 3 above... Its set to get colder though with snow over the weekend so that should put them to the test!

The air feels drier when I get in the car so it must be doing something

Well the sack type de-humidifier was a complete waste of time, did next to nothing in reducing misty windows. It was filled with a red sand type material, god knows what but it did bugger all.

The two plastic box rechargeable ones are filled with normal silicon balls you'd find in your shoe boxes etc, just there is a lot of them. They are all clear though apart from a few which are coloured blue.

I assume then that all silicon ball thingys are "rechargeable" as you heat them up when you plug them in so I have opened the two boxes and poured them into an old black sock (so they match the black parcel shelf and seats)

I'm going to try and get more colour changing silicon so I know when they need to be re-charged, pour them into an oven safe container and 30mins at 80°C is enough apparently to suck all the moister they have absorbed out of them.

Just now however I have the house de-humidifier sitting in the back seat foot well  on an extension lead out the garage. Going to leave it on all night (been on since 4pm) to hopefully dry it out completely.

Not sure if it's been said before, and I CBA to read the whole thead . Anyway, I found that if I point the vents at the footwell setting overnight or when not in the car it sovles the misting up quite a lot as the moist air from outside isn't blown onto the screen.

That's not to say it'll make the mist go faster, but it should help stop it forming overnight.

think ive tried every trick in the book and all my doors are full sealed, nothing works 100%

even put a new tailgate seal on the other week just in case it was that letting in moist air from outside

my o/s/r rear door carrier has just started to leak a little so the seal has started to hold water on top now, so it took me ages to clear mine tonight! will have to sort the carrier out asap before it gets worse, its rediculous the amount of cars that suffer with this problem! whats the best sealant people seem to use on these again? emoticon-0106-crying.gif

See here

Concensus was not to use air con or recirc... just put the fans onto screen and select number 4. Seems to be working for me so far.

i seem to be having the same problem in my both foot wells behind my two front seat!

but there is no water coming in from the seals just wondering if it will be the pollen filter or if the rear

pipe has come apart underneath

Speaking of pollen filters.. where does people get their ones from? Im currently looking at the carbon activated type for ~£12.. good?

I got one this week from VW for either 10.59 or 13.59 if it helps. It's white, so don't think it's a carbon one.

Well Today there was bugger all fog in the car! Not a single whiff of it, perhaps this household dehumidifier is working, shame I cant plug it into the 12v

I might put it in over night for the next few days so it gets all the moister out of the car thats collected over winter with the horrible snow and general wet weather. Plus hanging my air freshener over the exhaust port of the humidifier brought it back to life! Very peachy again!

BTW

How do you change the pollen filter on the furbie?

Edited by apmaman

Been noted quite a few times, but under the glove box, slide two things forward and backward in the car (apart) and a cover will drop off, slide the filter out (along with lots of fluff and leaves) then replace!

5 min job, honest! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

But make sure you get it in the right way round and that it 's clicked firmly into place before the cover's put back on...

what kind of dehumidifers are you all using ?

this damp weather is the only issue i have with my Fabia, the car is epic apart from the misting up problems, i just cant seem to beat it

I don't want to be accused of stating the blindingly obvious, but I use the air-con permanently in this weather, with the heat control set to twelve o'clock, the direction control set to nine o'clock, and the fan on position "2", and I never have any problem at all with misting up.

If it works for me, it should work for you also.

Obvious?

The AC doesn't work below 5degC - so mine wasn't coming on yesterday...

you NEVER ? have any misting up problems, seriously ?

its driving me around the bend, ive tried pretty much every solution posted on here

last night i took the pollen filter out to dry it out on the radiator, came to the car this morning and not a single bit of condensation inside, it was a miracle !

I also used to have this problem, so I left all 4 windows open last night to try and prevent the inside/outside temp difference, came out the house this morning and the car had gone, vanished, vamoose! Problem solved I guess!!!!

put a new pollen filter in yesterday, this time just a standard non-carbon one, i figured it would flow better and im now going along the route of letting the car breathe, im gonna set my direction to windows or windows and feet, and not feet before i get out the car, im gonna open my windows a bit for the last 30 seconds home, and im not gonna use recirc or the a/c

i think ive been doing all the wrong things to try and prevent the misting by actually trapping as much air as possible inside the car, and not allowing enough fresh air from outside in, see how it works the other way around

No, I never have any problems with misting up.

And yes, I am serious!

If you are not going to use the air-con then that will pretty much guarantee that your misting problems will continue.

As far as the re-circulating-air control goes, that is primarily for when driving through tunnels or in stop-start heavy traffic and worsens de-misting problems when it is used.

thanks for the tip, no more recirc for me :)

A 2kw fan heater for 30 minutes prior to driving off clears all foggy and icy windows. I've got mine on a timer. Also the car is nice and warm.
