If a car had been lowered & had aftermarket exhaust..

Featured Replies

Also some folk genuinely do fit a tow bar only for cycle carriers! I'd rather it be that than a car that has had a badly fitted strap on rack perched on the rear bumper/screen/tailgate, chaffing away the paint!

Some do, I'm one of them.

The point I was trying to make is that some people use such phrases to try to disguise the fact they've been towing a twin axle caravan every weekend for the last three years.

Despite having a tow bar on my car I'd never buy a used car with one fitted, because it puts doubt in my mind about what the cars been towing.

Same with performance enhancing modifications. Again there is every chance they've been driven responsibly and maintained a whole lot better than a fleet car.

Unfortunately, in my eyes, there is also an increased chance its been thrashed to within an inch of its life.

If I wanted a car to tow, I'd buy one without a tow bar and have one fitted.

If I wanted a higher performing vRS I'd buy standard and then have it remapped, lowered etc.

Just my preference, though I also support the idea that modded cars are driven by enthusiasts and are therefore more likely to have been maintained meticulously.

hmm funny you should mention tow bars but the one i have just bought has a tow bar fitted - only single electrics though so not been towing a caravan

No need to panic. I've a friend who actively looked for a car with a tow bar to save him the £300 it would require to fit one.

That was three years ago, no issues at all!

You can still tow a caravan with single electrics, I used to.

I think the whole thing is interesting, and makes you think about what you look for in a car, ie what you value and what you don't. We all make assumptions based on what we believe and our past experience.

Just exactly what is an "average mileage"? What does "one careful owner" mean & why is that worse than two? Why do we value "dealer" history, when we all know there are some poor ones out there? And why do we still not get a second opinion on a prospective major purchase?

My car is no longer standard, I've modified it to suit my preferences and in doing so I've generated a history folder about 2" deep! I don't drive like i've stolen it and yes it has a tow bar fitted (but never used (a long story))!

I hope that when I do decide to sell it on, the evidence will show it's a well cared for vehicle owned by an enthusiast & maintained by experts who know what they are doing  However I can't predict what others will or won't think!

But to the OP if you are worried about the modifications, then look elsewhere, it's not like there aren't many to choose from.

every car is different and so is every person so just because its been modded does not mean its been ragged to bits. Simple answer is this you are doubting the choice as you've asked the question, trust your gut and walk away plenty more out there.

My mate a a low mileage mini in standard form but I know he rags it from the moment he pulls away. Its got under 9k and is the same age as my fabia but I can tell you know he has got alot more wrong with his than I've got with mine with 10 times as much mileage.

Another point how many people on here have "but back to standard" their car before they have sold it. Honestly having a good friendly chat can tell a great deal about the person and a true petrolhead would have looked after the car, a boy racer would not have.

Probably a 90ft, 35 ton Yacht, clutch and DMF will be fine though..................:giggle:

That part always make me chuckle! where I work we have a fleet of 12 VW Sharans Tdi's, mostly 2006MY mid range spec with between 50-65k on the clock, each car does approximately 20 miles a day and will rarely get any higher than 4th gear. They are absolutely driven to destruction by one of 180 different staff who have the use of them. However if there were ever sold on, the V5 would show 'one owner'..........

I am hoping that it won't have a DMF - petrols don't do they ?!!

I'm actually quite pleased its got a towbar as i use a tow bar mounted bike rack..

Yep they have a DMF.

Thats what I need a towbar for, and hopefully a jet bike when swmbo lets me. :giggle:

Oh and just an observation, but I think you should change vehicle details to 'found a vRS, get in!' B)

Be interesting to see if it really is 4-wheel drive, as per the first item in 'Safety features' ;)

That would be one hell of a mod

Indeed!

I'm surprised with all the 'tasteful' mods he didn't think to uprate the chassis :wonder:

You would have to lose the nasty badge on the steering wheel! The wheels are lush though.

He has upgraded wheels and chipped the DVD player so he can watch DVDs whilst moving. Possibly the reason for the new wheels :giggle:

Anyone recognise the seller as being on here, and if not, why not? :|

why would a different exhaust affect the insurance?

Exhausts can improve performance.

An increase in performance over standard will likely incur a higher premium.

Sorry for the thread revival but.

The car listed in the ebay ad. Does anyone know if the owner is on here?

I've contacted him on Pistonheads and I was thinking of going to view it. Just doing a bit of research first

Thats led me to this post and I didnt know it had been listed on ebay. Not that it makes a difference but helps me get a picture of the amount of interest hes had.

And to answer the Op's question.

IMO it's totally dependent on the person selling the car. Iv'e bought and walked away from modified and standard cars before based on who was selling them. Theres a lot to be said for buying a car private rather than a dealer and judging how well its been modified and looked after by the owner.

I've been burnt in the past and more times with a standard car than a modified car.

You have to be realistic and no car is perfect no matter how much the seller belives their car is. If the mods have been done to a high standard and you are reasonably sure the car hasnt been thrashed all the time (but will have been "driven hard occasionally) and you get a good vibe from the seller it can be a cost effective way of buying the car you want. Another factor to consider is you modify the car to your taste and therefore anything you spend on performance or very specific mods are not going to return you money. They will only cost you money. A few optional extras like cruise, parking sensors etc can help you sell your car quicker but rarely make you any money or cover your costs. If the mods are too performance related its more likely it will slow your potentail sale down and you may end up in the position of dropping the price below a standard car of the same type or reverting your car back to standard.

If the car is in good/excellent condition. The mods are good quality and would be to your taste. And its priced realistically. Then trust your gut feeling and buy it. The risk is just the same as buying a standard car.
