Fabia rear mudflaps (photo's + a basic guide incl.)

Featured Replies

I've just got round to fitting a pair of standard fabia rear mudflaps to my vRS and thought it might be usefull to take a few snaps along the way to help any others out who might be thinking of doing the same in the near future

You'll have to excuse how filthy she is :P

The first thing to do is to remove the rear wheel and in my case wash all the mud and sand from around the area where the mudflap is going to go.

Remove the three screws highlighted above.

I then hacked away at various area's of the mudflap in order to get it to fit correctly.

Above shows the first area i cut out.

The rectangular area above shows where i cut a slit in the mudflap to allow the rear skirt to poke through as it was making it impossible for a flush fit.

The two highlighted screws are ones i replaced with longer ones with washers due to the original ones not reaching anymore.

Above is a small section i cut off the edge of the flap in order to get a flush fit to the bumper where the extension starts. I cut into the side and then down to roughly where the box finishes in order to get a perfect fit.

Above is what it looked like before I put the wheel back on that side.

This is a shot of a finished side

This is my new rear!

IMHO it looks loads better than without any.

The back of the car looks much more square and i like that as I've never been too keen on the rounded look it had before :D

I just need to get the mud flaps dirty now so they match the rest of the car :P

Exellent stuff

I was waiting for this post, saw your photo's in the gallery

Interesting. I get my new VRS in a couple of weeks time, with mudflaps fitted. Does this mean the dealer has to hack them about as well, or are the VRS mudflaps different?

I think someone said Skoda were about to launch some vRS specific rear mudflaps soon (sorry, but I can't remember who it was!). So you might be getting those. It would probably be a good idea to ask the dealer at the time of delivery and if they are the new vRS specific ones post some photos for people to see.

Skoda don't make rear mudflaps for the vRS so you'll either be getting hacked ones (which i doubt as its quite a lot of work for the money they will be able to charge you) or they might just be fitting some universal ones

Unfortunately that was me who said that about Skoda releasing some for the vRS and after a another visit to the dealer who told me that in the first place and after a phone call to Skoda while i was there it turns out they have never had any plans and don't have any future plans to bring any out :thumbdwn:

What I want to know is - how much spray do they keep off the rear windscreen going down the motorway (when it's wet of course) ? - and how much crap do they keep off the back of the car? - my rear is filthy at the mo and I'm fed up of getting my hands dirty when I open the damn boot.. :o

I'll let you know by the end of next week mate.

I do about 350+ motorway miles a week so i'll have a good idea if they are any use within a week easily ;)

Am I right in saying none of the Fabia models come with rear mudflaps now?

Well, the deal is agreed now - 4 mudflaps FOC (Skoda catalog price

They don't do a lot on mine. I carry a cloth for the dirt (in the boot :) ). I chose mudflaps to protect against stone chips, which are not whisked upwards onto the back of the car like the road muck.

No Fabia models come with mudflaps full stop unles you order it with a protection pack but even then they are dealer fit. The mudflaps fit stright on to the regular Fabia, only problem on the vRS is the bumper extension gets in the way. No problems on the front, the std flaps fit straight on.

Good write up, very clear

Well I've done a few hundred miles in bad enough weather to answer this question now :D

They do make a difference but not as much as I hoped they would :o

They seem to keep the back lights cleaner than before and the rear screen doesn't get as much crap slung up at it BUT it does still get a thorough coating of spray in the wet......just not as bad as before

But IMO they look nice and they do help so i'm staying with them

I've not driven without my rear mud flaps. The main crap I get is on the boot lid, around the handle. Some also gets on the rear screen, but I wonder what its route is to get there. Does the road crap come up from underneath the car and more forwards onto the screen? Or does it flow over the top and/or round the sides. What we need is a video clip from a chase car at the side.

There is something that I really don't understand with your mudflap instructions:

I have fitted Fabia mudflaps to my Furby vRS and I never needed to make things as complicated as stated above?

Front ones are a perfect fit as already stated.

Rears ones only needed a small bumper adjustment. You see there is no difference in the size of the wheelarch from the standard Fabia, so no cutting in the mudflaps was necessarry.

The only thing obstructing a perfect fit, was a wider (and bend) edge on the bumper part inside the wheelarch.

This edge on a standard fabia bumper is thin (2-3mm), whereas the vRS bumper for some strange reason has a wider edge (8-9mm).

This edge just bends into the wheelarch and is not really visible with the wheel fitted, so all that is required for the mudflap to fit right on, is cutting off the wider edge inside the wheelarch.

You can do that with a really sharp stanley knife, or a Dremel if you prefere.

As the bumper is pure plastic there is no risk involved in cutting the bend/edge off, and I never experienced the paint flaking while cutting (and I was even a bit rough).

When the 6-7mm is cut off, the rest is a perfect fit. No need for longer screews or anything else. Just use the ones provided with the kit.

When flaps are fitted you no longer see the part of the bumper you had to cut, but even if you were to remove flaps later, nobody would ever notice the cut inside the wheelarch, if you did a proper job.

Cutting the bumper took me 10 mins. for both sides, and fitting the flaps took an additional 20 mins. for both sides (rear flaps).

Hopes this makes sence, otherwise just go compare the bumper on your vRS to a standard Fabia at your local dealer.

Sorry I could'nt provide you any pictures, as I did the job 8 months ago.

Been happy with it ever since btw :)

Since doing the DIY i have bought new ones and did exactlt the same as you've just said. I used a hacksaw blade to cut the lip off mine and it worked a treat. once the wheels are off it takes less than 10 minutes to both sides!

I bought some flaps and intend to use this method!

Any chance of updating the pics so I know where to cut!

Cheers
