As have all of the sets I've ever had been.

Put my black steelies with winter boots on yesterday and I'm really not sure about the black look!

Any recommendations for trims?!

As have I. Scout was looking really nice with muddy 17" alloys on and now it looks functional but not pretty!

Last year I has some Halfords trims which enhanced the appearance no end. I'll have to stick them back on…

Presuming you have 16" steelies, perhaps you could try these;-

or these;-

http://www.skodaparts.com/product/yeti-wheel-trim-2009-2012-33132

or something from Halfords that may well be cheaper, but not as nice.

Those Octy ones don't look too bad, and not too dear (they are trims, after all). The Yeti ones look arguably better, but ~ £34 each delivered seems a bit steep. I did have a quick look at Halfords and they only had 1 trim (set). Might have to pop in to see them in the flesh. Or just get used to the black look.

Blimmin' cars - never easy. Or cheap!

Having looked at the temperatures for the week ahead, I decided now was the time to fit my new winter tyres (Dunlop Winter Sport 4D's on mytyres 16" steelies).

I had fitted one of them before realising that they have a fixed direction of rotation and of course, I had fitted it the wrong way around...so I removed it and carried on, until I got to the last wheel... to discover that three of them rotate the same way, the forth the other :wonder:

I presume I can get a local tyre dealer to remove, flip over and refit the tyre, then rebalance the wheel, to resolve this (it might sound like a stupid question but I am not very practically minded, so I prefer to double-check these things)?

I would have thought so. I had to search for quite a while before finding some non-directional tyres (so I could have a spare wheel that could be used on either side of the car without concern). Got Nokian WR-G2s in the end.

The steelies with Avons that I bought last year are up for sale in the Marketplace area if anyone is interested. They won't fit my Superb or the wife's Furby.

Whats the best way to store the summer tyres we've taken off? I've been advised by `experts` to stand then up...and by a different `expert` to lay them down one on top of the other. Whats the general feeling here?

Many thanks,

Mike.

I am definitely not an expert but I have laid mine down for the last two winters, with no discernible consequences.

I stack ours in the Garage on top of each other. No problem whatsover

This is what I was advised and what I do:

Tyres on their own stand next to each other on the floor in he garage. Every now and then, I roll them a bit so they aren't standing all winter on the same spot, although I'm not sure how important that is for tyres that don't have much weight put through them.

The other car's tyres are mounted on wheels and they lie on their sides - actually on a £25 tyre tree.

They are all in a dark and dry location. I think I'm doing the right thing…but will gladly stand corrected if others know better.

Tyre trees seem to be recommended as the way to go if you don't have wall hanging space for them. Fortunately I'm able to keep them in the in-laws cellar which maintains a fairly constant temp and humidity, so just have them stacked. I rotate them round every now & then just in case there are any issues.

Hi, Chris.

My tyres are just tyres without wheels inside...does that make any difference?

Okay after tonight's run back from work, I'm definitely getting a pair of winter boots put on the front. Couldn't put the power down (gently!) and the hill I live on hasn't been gritted, and again from a slow pace, the ABS wasn't particularly liking it. Avon ZV3 - not recommended for winter if you ask me!

So I've looked around all the threads here, and I'm a bit stumped by it all really (still!), Being a student I can't really afford a great amount, but that said I can't afford to have an accident if anything goes wrong either, and I certainly can't afford to miss work when it snows.

I've seen these, but I've also seen these:

and these:

Please get 4 not 2 or you will have plenty of grip at the front and absolutely none at the back and so end up backwards in someones front garden, or front room.

The Vredesteins from Tyremenonline are the ones to go for because

1. They are a mainstream brand (I've not heard of the other two brands before) and

2. What on earth is "seller refurbished" as a sale condition.

Please, please, please buy 4 not two!

At a similar price to the Vredestein you could get new 185/60/14 82T Nokian W+ from Oponeo for £46 delivered. They seem to get good reviews, and if they're anything like their A3s they'll stick like glue.

Having seen a Spacewagon on its side in a hedge this morning, which must have happened only minutes before I passed (others had already stopped, btw) on a bad patch of icy road (area had been flooded a few days earlier) I'm extremely glad I've got winter boots on.

Also a +1 for the four tyres rather than two.

Exactly my thoughts on the first two, as for the last point - Budget :( Unless I can get my hands on an alright pair of part worn, because what I'll probably do then is keep them on and store them in my parents' garage and it gives me an excuse for some VRS rims in summer :D

Best thing you can buy for your car in cold weather really makes a complete transoformation when driving on wet/ icy roads trouble is you have to watch out for other drivers as its easy to forget the much better grip you have and possibly end up with someone sliding into you as you can brake and they can't.

They certainly saved my bacon going to work at 5am on thursday the road must have been sheet ice following flood waters running of fields and no grit on road at one bit as the car slid a little but the esp and winter tyres kept me on the road as the back stepped out. Came back later to find in the same spot a corsa on its roof in the hedges.

There are these options below, all have the mountain snowflake symbol and for unfitted price seem good value. My mum is running the kleber (made my michellin) on her Yaris and they seem ok bit sensitve when weather gets warmer as they get a bit squidgy but should be fine until march ish and then change back to summers. Have Nokian WR2 on my fabia which are really good and then you could always go down the all season route with mountian snowflake my MX5 runs vredistin snowtrac all year round and my brothers fabia is on hankook optimo 4s which both seem good in the slippery conditions.
