THE Winter Tyres Thread

I paid by credit card and was my first purchase and I received the wheels/tyres in 5days from order and no email as you suggest. Perhaps they have upgraded their card sales system since you used them.

It was only two weeks ago. Nothing to doing with their system they said it was 'company policy'. I have heard of others with similar experiences.

I contacted them when they requested additional proof I was who i said I was; turns out they have been defrauded quite a bit sending out wheels and tyres in the past, and asking for proof of address etc, is one of their ways or ensuring their risk is reduced. Sounded fair to me once it was explained. I used a recent utility bill, blocked out the account numbers etc, left just name, address, and date, scanned and e-mailed it off. Job done, wheels and tyres delivered in quick time. If you use a credit card you get added protection which is why I particularly wanted to use mine. I'd use them again without hesitation.

I think you'd be better off with steel rims, for the simple reason being if you do damage an alloy rim, it's going to cost you a lot more to either replace or repair than a steel one.

I was considering the alloy wheel "route" but when I mentioned it to a couple of work colleagues & my old man, they made that very point, so I went with the steel wheels & some covers.

I found the cost of steels to be as much as second hand alloys. I've never damaged an alloy either.

These are the ones I bought. They've since had Goodyear Ultragrip 8 fitted and are now waiting in my shed ready for fitting once the cold weather hits. The irony is that yesterday was probably the hottest day of the year!

The offset on a facelift vRS is ET51. With 16" wheels you'll be using a narrower rim and fitting a narrower tyre to it, so you can get away with a lower offset. With 205/55/16 you can probably get with anything in the ET35-ET54 range. Have a look on www.willtheyfit.com to see what I mean.

If you mean you can't find the offset on the Golf wheels you're looking at then ask the seller to look at the wheel - the offset should be stampped on the back of one of the spokes, or between bolt holes if the bolt holes are normally covered. Seeing as an Octavia II is basicly the same chassis as a mk5 Golf they should be fine.

Well they're going to have a problem with me then. I don't have a utility bill(s), all mine is done automatically through the online banking systems, they won't be having any bank statements either as proof, nor will the be getting a passport or driving licence.

So if they get ****ty with me then they can keep the damned tyres & wheels and they can refund the money & I'll take my custom elsewhere.:finger:

Anyone know what the Skoda part number is for a 16" steel wheel?

I must have a honest face (or something) :smirk:

It's not just mytyres asking for this sort of additional info, a company I've bought bike lights off do a similar thing for new customers, it is a bit of a ballache but at least they're trying to avoid fraud. The easy option is to link your credit card to your paypal account and you're then double protected.

While mytyres' payment process hasn't been the smoothest for some, my experience with them has been excellent - I've bought two sets of winter tyres in two separate orders recently - both delivered correctly within a week, no fuss at all (paid via paypal). I'd recommend them. (though granted there are some good prices elsewhere, on the net and otherwise)

Having done a test fit of the steel wheels from Mytyres the other night, I notice that while the alloy wheel sits flush agains the hub, the steel wheel is shaped such that the bolt holes don't sit flush against the hub, there's a couple of mm gap behind them. Should I be using different bolts in this case? I saw on another thread 900000 saying with the official Skoda winter wheels you can use the standard bolts, but is this because of the design of the wheel, or that the bolts can be used with any wheel?

ETA:

Well I e-mailed MyTyres to ask about bolts and just got this back

We would like to inform you that you will have to purchase bolts for the steel wheels because the current ones that you have(from the alloy wheels) are not recommended because the material that they are made of is weaker and they could break.

So any ideas on on bolt sizes or where to get them?

Same size as you already have -- ask a dealer for the size -- but then make sure the ones you get are suitable for the wheels you have.

FWIW when I bought Skoda steel wheels for our Mk1 Octavia I asked the dealer if I needed different bolts. Turns out that for many Skoda cars the same bolts are used. This makes sense because Skoda have often supplied alloy road wheels and a steel spare, so they must have had the steel wheels made so that the same bolts can be used.

When you buy after-market steel wheels the shape of the bolt head may well be different. Since I'm not explaining it very well, take a look at http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/wheel-bolts.html.

I notice that while the alloy wheel sits flush agains the hub, the steel wheel is shaped such that the bolt holes don't sit flush against the hub, there's a couple of mm gap behind them.

That is the part I am concerned about. Is that gap ok and is it taken up when the bolts are tightened?

I assume the bolt strength isn't the problem but it must be taper, cone or flat to match the steel wheel.

I have just bought a set of steel wheels with Avon winter tyres from My Tyres. Prices were reasonable, 4 x wheels and tyres = £470 delivered.

Has anyone had experience with the Avon winter tyres (ICE TOURING)

Just bought same wheels and tyres today but mine were 490.00 pounds does anyone know what pressure to put in 205/55/16 Avon ice touring.

does anyone know what pressure to put in 205/55/16 Avon ice touring.

Look what it says on the inside of the fuel filler cover. Skoda variously appear to recommend either the same pressures as normal or up to 0.2 bar extra. Across the last two winters on our Mk1 Octavia I used the higher pressures and that seemed fine.

Winter tyres on steel wheels on the way now from tyremen. I like the idea of centre caps which seem to be available for VW caddy and T5 steel wheels and possibly get skoda stickers or leave plain. Can't get any suppliers to state if they will fit non VW 5x112pcd wheels.

Anyone know?

How do they clip on?

Thanks

The clip onto the wheel bolts - The steel wheel in use doesn't come into it.

VW T5 wheels and centre caps DO NOT fit on the Octavia, Superb or Yeti. They are 5x120 and not 5x112 as you need. The centre caps only attach to the bolts - to which the 5x112 refers. It is the diameter of a circle drawn through the nuts. The T5 caps just about engage but many, many a person on this forum that have done so have lost one if not all their T5 caps once you start driving.

What is the load rating required for 205/55/16 winter tyres on a 57 VRS petrol? The spare on my car is a 91.

The tyres I just ordered for my vrs tdi are 91.

Well I ordered mine on 30/09 from mytyres & got a confirmation email from them, but heard nothing since. No phone calls, No emails...

have you looked at http://www.tyremen.co.uk/? They are in UK at least.

just checked this and it's over £550 for wheels and tyres! Hell!!! I'll stick with normal tyres me thinks!

costco now have michelin alpin tyres in stock, in their Edinburgh store at least.
