See my thread about Oponeo. (My ATS wheels eventually turned up just after lunchtime, 15 days after they were ordered instead of the 4-5 days they should have been delivered in.)

 

I've just bought some Continental WInterContact TS 850's (225/45 R17) 94H XL as they were cheaper on mytyres than on Oponeo, (who also forfeited the £550 order for their incompetence with the wheel order) I went for the slightly higher load index because every so often I have to do load lugging, so got them just in case.

 

I was going to go for the V rated one's but the chances of me doing anything near 100 mph in wintry conditions are a big fat zero.

Ditto.

 

Got the same tyres from mytyres for my Superb,as the TS850 seems to win every award going.

Ok. Narrowed it down to

 

Hankook EVO XL or Continental 850. Continentals cost more (£28 a tyre). Anyone know what sort of mileage you would expect to get from set a Hankook or Continental?

Another dumb question. Been told the tyre I need is the 205/55 R 16 94V-XL . Does it really matter about the 'V'. I have no intention of doing over 90mph let alone 100+?

I have a set of TS850s and have a Hankook Evo W310 as a winter spare (because its asymmetric and cost peanuts). The Contis are far better made, beat the W310s in all tests and have a deeper usable tread so you'll offset the £28 with longer life.

I've got the H-rated ones because I'm very unlikely to do anywhere near 100 mph, let alone 130 in the winter time, so you should be fine with the lower H-rated ones and save a few quid into the bargain.

Thanks guys. All done, Went for Continental 850's and 94V. I could save a few pennies by going H but decided against, the real saving was to go load rating 91 but was told that was a no, no, so the Contis are expensive but am confident they will be worth it. Thanks for help.

Well,I've bitten the bullet and fitted my new steel rims with Conti TS850 tyres from mytyres.co.uk to my Superb.Took 40 minutes for all 4 !!!

 

I know the temperature is still above 7degs C but I'm having knee surgery in 2 weeks and wanted it done before then.

 

My last car came with mud and snow tyres as OE equipment which I used all year round for 4 years so I'm not fussed about the tad of extra wear I might cause !!

 

Quite pleased with the result.I know alloys look better but I prefer steels for the winter as heavier so more grip and they wear better.

Just need to get some stick on Skoda wheel centres.

 

Any idea if that's possible ?

Had my winter tyres fitted to a new set of wheels today and then fitted onto the car.  Driving home from the garage in the dark on 29th November at 5pm and the temperature was 10½C.  Why did I bother?  So far it looks like I may have chosen the wrong winter to fit my first set of winter tyres.

Hi all. I have a bit of a winter tyre conondrum. I currently have sunew ys112's on my octavia vrs estate (they were on the car when I bought it, not through choice) and from what I've read about them they are not the best. I have a young family and want my car to be a safe as possible over the winter months as my wife sometimes drives my car with little one with her and obviously my daughter is in the car with me sometimes aswell. Though i said it would never happen again, im looking at some subtle mods in the new year, Remap and some 17" spiders. so with the remap and 17s on the cards what would you do? I'm willing to pay good money for some winter wheels/tyres so here are my options:

1: Keep the sunews on throughout the winter and hope they last and don't harm me/us.

2: Stick some winter tyres on my 16" spiders and change them for 17s and summer tyres when the weather gets warmer?

3: Buy some steels and winter tyres from eBay and swap change to 17s when the weather warms up?

This has never been a problem in the past as the only person I had to look after was myself, now I have a family to watch over aswell.

Thanks. I was looking at some Dunlop sp winter sport 4d's or Goodyear ultragrips.

Has anyone had any experience with these, you get quad clubcard points on black circles.

For your circumstances, I would also go for option 2. As you seem to care about safety, then definitely ditch the ditchfinders, especially in winter! If I get tyres I'm not 100% happy with on a used car, then they get replaced first thing.

 

I have Ultragrip 8s on mine and they are excellent. Though you may want to look at Continental TS850s too, as they seem to win nearly every single test.

Sl. off topic, but looking after your family means looking after yourself too.  When I'm having a bit of a blat (as far as I can in my barge anyway), or if some twerp gets the blood boiling, the thing that calms me down is the thought of what would happen to the kids if I bought it.

 

Anyway, no.2 option for me too.  I recommend Nokians if you can get them, they've been great.

I went for the dunlops in the end, they had the better rating/review of the two choices. I came to the conclusion that none of the top tyre brands would be bad when it comes to winter tyres, expensive but hopefully worth it and a nice load of clubcard points to boot!

I've mostly had michelins or continentals on most of my cars before summer tyres that is and never had any problems. Hopefully the same here.

Thanks for the feedback all, you have been most helpful. I may write a little review after some mileage on the dunlops.

Hi all,  just fitted winter tyres on steel wheels to my mk1 vRS !   wouldnt have it any other way really the difference they make is noticeble from first drive .  

 

btw   wheels are 6.5x  16"  5d x 100  tyres 205/55 R16  Continental WinterContact TS830p

Drove over the Kirkstone pass today (Lake District) passing various stuck vehicles with some cheap Nankang sv's on the front and Goodyear ultra grip 8's on the rear. Steep hills with snow and ice no problem for the Nankangs. Went passed stuck vehicles twice but thought a third pass would be taking the ****. Pic taken on a clear section after the hill.
