Engine/Turbo sound after remap?

Featured Replies

Hey up guys, hope you're enjoying the snow! :p

Just wondering after a remap does a Fabia TDI 100 sound different?

more like similar to a VRS or Ibiza FR or golf gt tdi 130?

I.e ticking over or when the turbo kicks in????

Because atm mine sounds a bit like a van?

I could be totally wrong but worth asking!!! hehe :D

remap shouldnt affect engine sound at all you may be able to hear the turbo spooling harder but i wouldnt say it is noticeable certinly wasnt in mine.

I`m 99% sure the sound changes. Me and chrisw_vrs noticed when we got ours mapped. Only slightly, and it`ll just make it sound louder. I doubt yours sounds any different to any other PD engine. They all sound like clattery olds diesels. Esp in this cold, past few mornings mine has sounded awful! You`ll just have to get use to it im afriad lol

haha no it isn't that bad, I just like the sound of the 140-150 standard tdi engines. They just sound more smooth lol.

My fabia ain't that bad. I haven't driven or sat in a VRS yet but would love to see how different it is. But hopefully a Remap will give me some hope looool.

Btw whats your Clutch Biting point like on your Fabia VRS, is it low down or pretty in the middle?

I've got a feeling my clutch has seen it's better days, but will replace when I have to get it towed home :p

It's biting point is near the middle, doesn't slip or anything,

Only because I have driven a polo tdi 100 sport and the clutches biting point is lower down than mine, reducing chances of stalling when I get a bit lazy lool.

Let me know mate

Cheers

no sound difference in mine

I have a sachs clutch so its not a fair comparison. When i had the original clutch tho, it use to bite near the middle. If its not slipping dont worry too much. As much as everyone bangs on about them only coping with xxx lb of torque, if you drive it correctly it`ll take a fair amount of power without slippage.

Who did the remap, there really should not be any difference in sound, my remapped superb sounds exactly the same now as it did before it was remapped. Its possible that the remap is a poor quality one.

Noooo mate im getting it remapped sooooon from a guy in Chesire £99, I'm sending the ECU off to him, he's had good feedback from many guys.

His ad is listed on Ebay. For higher end models its £195.

But £99 he is charging for my Fabia, I might ask him if I could just drive down there and pay a bit extra.

Mine sounds different from 2-3.5k revs when you put your foot down. It sounds like the turbo working harder to me.

Noooo don't do it... if it goes wrong or lost in the post you have just bricked you car!

Pick a proper tuner and visit them, you will pay double though but you will get a rolling road out of it too.

He's got top notch feedback mate, yh i'm worried about sending the ECU.

I will ask him if I can just pop down and have it done there and then. He might charge extra but oh well, it's less worrying I suppose.

£100? Another £150 get a proper custom map, would be much better idea imo

If its Jason at MoreBHP then I wouldn't worry at all. Jason is a genuine guy who seems to do it more for the love than the money. He's got some top software and offers a great friendly service. If your not too far away from crewe I would recommend the trip down, meeting him really does put your mind at rest about his work. He may not have a rolling road, but there is miles of twisty national roads around his unit which Jason insists on going for a spin around whilst monitoring engine activity on his laptop and can give you a live torque read-out as you drive.

Any one who says 'don't risk it, go to a big tuning company' or 'its probably bad software' has obviously never driven with one of his maps. For the VRS the power is smooth and strong all the way to the red-line (unfortunately I think the sound is still the same... :D ). The reason he offers maps so cheap is that he spends almost nothing on advertisement so that he is able to offer his services at a reasonable cost, relying mainly on word of mouth, such as this post...

Don't be put off by the posts above, I'd go for it (just cross your fingers Royal Mail dont ruin your ECU...).

Thats it mate I think you're 100% spot on. I am close by to him and for £99 you can't go wrong, I paid less than £1K for the car and its a minter, minus some niggles.

I don't want to go out and spend £300+ on a remap, when I could just get some VRS bumpers and alloys for £200 if I do a bit of seraching hehe :D

One thing mate, what else will I need exterior wise to make my car into a VRS lookalike? Will I need side skirts and wheel arch trims?

Thanks

Pretty sure it's bumpers, wheels and exhaust trim for the outside. Have a look at the "GT" front bumper tho, it's a standard skoda part, but looks quite smart, and a little different to just a vrs rep.

Thanks for letting me know Matt, thing is the VRS front bumper just looks a lot nicer and more complicated than the GT bumper. haha.

I like the later 2005-7 bumper for the fabia 6Y

Yep, as Matt says it's the bumper, lower grille, foglights and foglight surrounds that are different for the front end. Rear is just the bumper and exhaust trim (good excuse to get a stainless system), plus wheels, of which you have a large choice in 16'' or 17'' sizes.

I'll have an 05-07 non-vRS front bumper, foglights, surrounds etc for sale at the end of next week ;)
