Storing Winter Tyres

Featured Replies

We've now got 2 lots (8 in total) of summer tyres in our garage. Which is the best way to store them? Currently they are wrapped in plastic bags, sitting on their side 4 high. They are just bare tyres, no wheel, so presumably this should be ok?

Cheers

Mine are stacked on their side. I asked the tyre garage that fitted the winter tyres...he said it was fine to store them this way..Just keep them dry

tyres on the wheels: horizontal, bare tyres: vertical. Of course store them dry and in the dark.

In Germany they sell a 'winter tyre storage set' which consists of a heavy metal base and a pole around which you drop the tyres on the side - so they are stacked sideways one above the other. There is then a canvas cover which goes over them all.

Try eBay for a second hand restaurant table/base & take the top off....

On their side - Why do tyre depots always store tyres vertical on rails?

Probably so they're easy to remove, as required. Also, I think I read that tyres not on rims should be stored vertically.

Bit difficult to pull one out from the middle of a stack!

@brimma: I've got one of these. They're really good to store my tyres (and wheels). Visited a Volvo dealership lately, and saw that all the tyres (+wheels) were stored vertically. So, what's the use of storing them at the dealer's, when they do it wrong?

I dont think there is a right or wrong way to store tyres as long as you dont store them for too long.

If the tyres are of the rim's store them virticaly, if you stack them on there side the side walls will collapse inword under there own weight, and will make them an absolute bitch to re fit

dont wrap them up just avoid getting moisture in the inside ,and if the tyres aren't directional mark the rotation so they go back the right way.

Tyres only can be stored on the side, but not on a pile.

If stored as wheels (rim and tyre) than a tyre rack as in Brimmas post can be helpfull.

The also come where the wheels are held upright.

I have them as a rack where the wheels are "lying" on top of each other.
