More Winter Tyres

Am I missing something? This guy claims that his Yeti has "low-range". News to me. I wish it did but I've never heard of it even as an option. Or is this yet more shoddy journalism?

The later me thinks.

The author appears to be a motoring journalist of some kind - with a KIA on test.

Living in Scotland with two 4WD vehicles on summer tyres???

I don't think I would take much of what he writes too seriously.

I think the fool means "off road button". Guess he thinks that is a "low ratio".

I don't think I would take much of what he writes too seriously.

"the doughty Yeti almost managed to butt its way through the banks of snow but, at the top of the drive, its diesel particulate filter clogged up. "

Is he trying to suggest that somehow snow got in to the DPF?

That sounds like a prime example of what I call "remote journalism". I first came across it years ago when I attended a motor race at Brands Hatch. The report that came out a few days later gave a totally different result, including a driver who had gone out on the penultimate lap. I decided he must have left early and reported what he had seen at that point as the result. Therefore "remote journalism"!

That article is so riddled with inaccuracies that I am amazed that the Daily Telegraph published it.

At least some of the comments from readers are a bit more believable and set out to put him firmly in his place.

I'm a member of Performance Torque (For now anyway)

Look what replies I got when I asked if anyone was fitting winter tyres:

I know exactly where you're coming from on that. I also frequent a lot of other forums where there are too many folks who believe that they are driving gods for one reason or another and no way would they eschew their "performance" rubber for something that is labelled as winter only. They've been on a track day or two and spend the rest of the time bragging how they love the ice, 'getting the rear end out' and such.

You cannot beat the laws of physics in the end and it IS a fact, winter tyres are best in , well, winter. In the ice, its not just a few percent gain, especially in terms of braking, its hundreds of percent better. No brainer really.
