Mpg issues in 6th gear

Featured Replies

In 6th and 60-70mpg my trip comp goes from low 30s to mid 40s... I did a 150 mile trip and I averaged 50mpg going steady, I thought these vrs's mines mapped could do 60mpg or 55 at least.

My clutch is slipping during a few over takes in 4th the rev counter was dancing up and down biting then not biting I know this wouldn't have helped my mpg

It's being in 6th and 60-70 is concerning me, being in 5th at 50mph I can get high 50s to 60s but as soon as in 6th it's just crap

You're relying on the computer figures.

Ignore them.

Full tank to full tank is the only reliable way to work out MPG.

I'm guessing those 4th gear overtakes account for it too Chris.

And dont take it as gospel that you'll get 55+MPG, driving like an OAP, i used to squeeze an "indicated" 63mpg, but that was sub 60mph driving.

There's more wind resistance to overcome at 70 than 50. I would expect better mpg at 50 in 5th than 70 in 6th.

Remember the figures for 60mpg is when traveling at around 57mph and probably on a flat road. You won't get 60mpg doing 70mph.

Being in 6th does not necessarily mean more mpg. It depends on how you are working the engine. It needs to be free running to maximise mpg. This depends on a number of factors such as gradient, wind, etc etc

uh-oh i sense an upcomin engine load versus rpm arguement.....(again)

as said though take the OBC reading with a pinch of salt

my total overall average has never been over 50mpg and thats 90% dual carriageway taken at 75 with an indiciated 50-55mpg it must get dragged down by some serious acceration up slip roads :)

Yup. It's all about that loud pedal on the right, not rpm. :)

I can drive slow enough to get decent mpg, i try for a while, then decide i`d rather pay a few quid more and enjoy my drive. Even then, its never terrible, even running more power. Whole point of a quick diesel.

Matt

If your clutch is slipping then that won't help your MPG figures either. C' mon now, 55mpg is very good and as said above the computer thing is only a guide.

Wind resistance increases in proportion to the SQUARE of the speed - hence it's ALWAYS going to be less efficient driving at higher speeds...

I only got 50mpg it just hit 50 at the end of my trip, going fairly slow due to the weather. I'll see how much of a difference my new clutch makes - the revs were shooting up and down a lot it's def on it's last legs

Standard clutch, should say I checked tyre pressures and one front was at 20psi and rear was at 9psi ( 2 fronts are almost new and rear rim is leaking air despite paying £45 for refurb 3 weeks ago.

Either the front alloy is leaking air or its a slow puncture, I think the alloys are done they are 7 years old almost.

Oh I got 53mpg on same trip this time with fully inflated tyres and 6th gear at 70mph was showing a nicer 55-65mpg

9?! feckin hell! :giggle:

So it's of to the tyre shop for a repair then.

count your self lucky my fabia vrs is doing 34mpg at the moment , booooo
