headlight bulb recommendations

Featured Replies

seen as the nights are drawing in and due to the fact the standard bulbs are like flickering candles that light up jack s*** i'm wondering what bulbs you guys use? or can recommend? (also anyone using silvertec indicator bulbs? any good?)

links if poss

Also I used silvertec indicator bulbs in my last car and they were good but still haven't got round to getting them for my vRS yet lol

I've been using Philips X-treme Power headlight bulbs for 3 years now. Shed loads more light, and I'm still on my first set so they seem to last well too.

I'm using Philips Blue Vision fog light bulbs and sidelight bulbs, and Philips Silver Vision indicator bulbs (yes I love Philips bulbs!!).

With the headlights on full beam, it's pretty epic now. If you need more light then you should probably start wearing glasses or eat some carrots! HID lamps are for tarts.....

Ye but you need h4 if you've got a mk1 octy.

I fitted some Osram night breaker plus bulbs a couple of days ago (90% brighter, 10% whiter and upto 35m longer beam).

I drove to work and back yesterday (05.30 - 19.00) across the Cotswold hills and all I can say is they were poo compared to the old Phillips 50% uprated bulbs I had before, needless to say the old bulbs are going back in today.

+1

I find the H4 Philips X-treme last much longer than the Osram Nightbreaker. I also find the light quality better with the X-tremes.

Philips X-treme bulbs here too, superb improvement over standard.

Looks like the Philips are winning B)

I went for Osram Cool Blue bulbs as I do a lot of unlit motorway driving and I wanted to brighten things up without using illegal bulbs or blinding people.

I have used them in the past and find they provide a marked improvement with a crisp white beam compared to the normal slightly yellow glow. Even though they are called cool blue I would say they are white rather than blue. I have these for side lights and dipped head lights and they are a lot better.

They also came top rated in one of the auto express reviews http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/213030/osram_cool_blue.html

I use Philips X-Treme too and find them great, last a while too!

Yes H7 bulbs are legal. The H number relates to the number of filaments and connector type/size not legality. The power rating determine legality. As previously said you want H4 for a mk1 octavia.

The two main types of bulbs for head lights are H4 (two filaments) and H7 (single filament, so seperate bulbs for dip and main beams). There are other types around and in use as well.

Personally I have Osram night breakers in but may try the Phillips for my next set.
