Car won't start - Starter Motor problem?

Featured Replies

Had to call out the RAC... he gave the starter motor a whack and it started.

It did work, left it 2 mins and tried again and it's totally dead again.

He said I needed a new starter motor but could it be signal wire to the starter motor is snapped? The whack may have re-bridged the gap.

How do I check? Guess I'll have to get it to a garage?

Thanks

I'm not sure how you would check, but mine did a similar thing and it was the wire. It's fairly common.

Mine "went" last week. Turned out to be the signal wire. Which I've crimped back together and band-aided with insulation tape.

Unless you've done it before, leave yourself at least 2 hours to strip things down, fix it and re-assemble. Battery box, battery, airbox and intake pipe all need to come off to see the signal wire properly. You'll need at least 10mm and 13mm sockets plus a philips screwdriver or two. I needed to use a deep socket to get one of the battery box nuts off. There's a counterbalance on the gearchange mech that might be in the way, it'll push aside.

Some of the bolts/fixings will have rusted. Tip is don't force them, if they appear to get "tight", trying to remove them, reverse the wrench/spanner and tighten things back up and spray liberally with WD40 etc. Then try removing the nut again. Again, don't force it. I spent 10 minutes getting one of the battery box nuts off. Better than the job being stuffed because I stripped the threads!

BTW: If the signal wire's broken, it's the wire leading in from the right to the top of the starter motor solenoid. If busted, it should be apparent if you gently push the other wires in the vicinity towards the right. Any break should then be apparent...

Normally tapping or banging a Starter Motor , is to free the copper carbon brushes in their holders, moving them in to make contact with the commutator (copper pads that revolves).Dust from the copper carbon brushes as they wear gets trapped between the brushes and their holders trapping the brushes.
