How can the same sh*t happen to the same guy twice!

Featured Replies

I used to own an 02 Polo two years ago it had to be booked in for a replacement driver side coil spring plus top mount bearing coming to a nice sum of some £160.

Last year I took delivery of my 56 Fabia VRS and until Friday it had been flawless, save for the usual niggles everyone here knows about.

So I am driving home when I here this odd clunking coming from somewhere on the drivers side. Being the optimist I am I thought ignore it it will go away but as with all things it ended up with me driving the last mile home with the radio off listening for anything odd. Of which their was a lot.

Lucky me I work right next door to a garage so next day I asked the guys if they could look at the car, two hours later I am staring in shocked disbelief at yet another busted front drivers side coil spring and duff bearing. I know the Polo and the Fabia are the same platform so is this coil spring issue a common problem? I don't aim for potholes but is this really an indication of just how cr*p our roads are or is it something I am doing when I drive?

The garage quoted me £150 for the work but this time round the car is covered by an extended warranty so lucky me I don't have to pay. I have however had the car sitting in a garage since Saturday waiting for the parts to arrive from VW to get the car sorted.

If I am lucky I'll get the car back just in time for the next wave of rubbish weather to render it off the road again.... sigh!

It is an indication of how bad our roads are and also an indication that our tax payers money, road tax is also disappearing down a pot hole of its own.

Springs are a common failure issue on many cars, irrespective of make, it's an area where they have cut production costs.

Mine failed on my Fabia too. emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Personally, wish they'd cut money on stuff like pointless engine covers, over engineered tool kits etc, and spent some more on something as crucial to my safety as springs!

Out of interest cause I have a clunking noise that's started aswell, does the noise happen if u brake sharply?

Noclunking noise when applying brakes. The clunking noise from applied brakes sounds like an issue relating the brake caliper, I am sure it has popped up here before and is another one of those common issues that affect the Fabia. I am sure one of the more knowledgeable members will be able to direct you down the right route.

The two cars that I have had this happen to actually had slightly different issues.

The Fabia made a rattle clunking noise over any pot holes on the driver side and pulled slightly to the right at speed.

The Polo clunked and rattled over potholes but it also developed a very load sproooonnnnggg noise with vibration through steering wheel when any form of steering lock was applied. I diagnosed the busted coil spring on that very quickly so never drove it at speed so can;t say if it would have pulled to the right as well.

Picked the car up today, dunno if it is placebo effect or what but all the little issues seem to have gone, the slightly notchy first to reverse gear change has gone, the 06 stutter even feels better. The downisde though is that I noticed every single pothole on the roads and once you notice boy do you really see how bad they are.

Sorry about your broken spring saga but I would of thought it is best to change both front springs, you sure it is not lopsided now.

I'd definately replace both springs, being a vRS and all!

I agree, and the Polo spring would have been manufactured in "Skoda land" - well the replacement ones I fitted to my wife's Polo were. Maybe try to check the springs over every summer and chip off any rusty junks, rasp clean and cover with black Hammeritepaint - and do the same on the driveshafts.

You will normally lose some of the balls from the top bearing at the instant the spring breaks and the load disappears momentarly from the bearing.

Nope cars handles fine no pull in either direction. Same as the Polo actually.

The warranty will only cover the stuff that is broken and needs to be replaced, since only the driver one was bust the driver side one is the one that got replaced along with the top mount bearing.

What I do know is that the springs are colour coded with a series of dots (3 I think) you have to quote these colour codes on the spring to get the right replacement one.
