Terrible headlights

Featured Replies

Has anyone replaced the bulbs in their mk1? I have searched the forum and found a thread on a Fabia forum about some Philips bulbs, but the reviews aren't staggering. The standard headlights are terrible on my Mk1. When I drive my wifes Audi I can see for miles, but when I get in my car it feels almost dangerous. I don't want to go down the route of Xenons....

Have you thought about getting the light alignment checked, as this can cause problems. Your bulbs may also be worn out, at 8 years old they wont be the original bulbs so it may be worth buying some new quality bulbs to replace yours which maybe discoloured causing loss of light output.

I have my mot next week, so I am guessing they will check the alignment. I think my bulbs must be old, but want to make sure I replace them with the brightest I can get....

The lights are poor on the mk 1 octy vrs,on my mk1 i replaced the standard bulbs with some uprated ones from halfords & there was a improvement but still not as good as other cars ive had,the ones on my mk 2 octy are a 100% improvement! :)

I've just fitted Philips x treme power headlight bulbs and there a massive improvement over the standard bulbs

With 50% brighter Quartz-Xenon bulbs (not plasma discharge units) from Powerbulbs, I get a visible return from things (not retro-reflective) a kilometer away; just how bright do you want?

Agreed on the Phillips X-Treme, major difference. Got them with free sidelights from Powerbulbs.

+1 for the phillips, such a huge difference. teamed with led sidelights it looks good andis much much brighter!

I paid £17.99 delivered off of ebay!

Also fitted philips blue vision side light bulbs £5.99 delivered off ebay aswell.

Another Philips X-treme convert here, massive difference. Just fitted some superb 9-LED sidelights a few days ago too, bargain for £7 from fleabay!

Is it the H4 we need for the Mk1? There seems to be a few different types of bulbs, some with different fittings and some with both main and dipped beam all in one...

Yep it's H4 you need for the mk1

The H4 does have main and dipped in one. Simple swap, just don't touch the glass :)

Yep it's H4 you need for the mk1

The only exception to this (for the benefit of other readers who may look at this thread in future) is cars with OEM Xenons. The main beam is H1.

that is correct, but i presume if it had xenons it would have stated in the title and if you look at my post it clearly states (Yep it's H4 you need for the mk1 meaning the OP!).

plus aren't xenons brighter than standard anyway??

Yeah I know that Si, just making sure that someone else reading this doesn't take it to mean that they need H4 if they have xenons.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I use Bosch Xenon Blue H4's, with free matching side lights. Brighter and whiter than standard and less than £20 for the lot. B)

HHas anyone tried xtreme vision as opposed to xtreme power? Is the claimed additional 20% worth the extra tenner?

Not been tempted to try those - the normal ones are so good that any increase in light will probably only amount to a decrease in lifespan. Besides, a tenner is half the price of your next set :)

I think you're probably right. Think I'll just go for the xtreme power ones from powerbulbs.

What about the side lights mate what would i need yhere?

H4 for Hi/Lo. I'd Recommend some Osram Nightbreakers. I run the gold edition ones, very impressed.

W5W for sidelights plenty to choose from.
