Today I replaced my RNS510 (columbus) with a Kenwood DNX520VBT

Featured Replies

Right, it's finally installed and mostly working fine.

[x] bluetooth to phone

[x] sat nav

[x] aux & usb inputs

[ ] DVD

[ ] radio

I get audio, but no visuals for DVD playback. Just a blue screen with the message 'parking off'. Did you get this too Nick?

And I need to pull apart the connector Skoda use for the antenna, as it's not going to fit this unit as it is!

  • are you selling your columbus then ??

  • Nick's a bit of a headbanger - I'm sure he'll be fitting a whacking great sub to fill his boot in the near future........ ........if only to challenge the Protons which were at Chatsworth this year

  • Yes, I haven't swapped the VW logo for a Skoda / briskoda one yet, but I understnd it's easy to do. You can change the illumination on the unit to any colour. I tried different greens but I like the w

Thats usually a safety thing, so the dvd only play with the handbrake on?

Nah, doesn't do that either. I've read elsewhere that this can be bypassed by connecting the the parking brake wire (light green) to a ground source, but I'm not sure if this is accurate, or how to do that.

The sound on this system is amazing. Love it even with the standard speakers.

One more thing. The AUX point in the centre arm rest no longer works. Anyone know if it is possible to connect this up? Cheers.

thats been asked many times recently and the general answer is no it seems. Doesnt the Kenwood have an Aux anyway?

It does but it's positioned in a rather annoying place.

Completely forgot about the 6 CD changer in the boot, i assume that wont connect either?

No, you will need a kenwood cd changer.

You could extend the aux on the headunit to a more convienient place

Do people still use CDs?

loads lol

An SQ car wouldnt be seen dead with a USB or MDI type of thing

JVC make a head unit that plays flac from USB. I'd way rather have that than CD.

I assume this is the same shape as a Columbus rather than a Stream?

No, hence forgetting I even had one! It had the same 6 CDs I put in the first week I bought the car!

Nick, did you get additional dash trim from Skoda?

Additional dash trim? I just used the old one from my Columbus.

I guess the one that comes with the Columbus is different to the standard headunit then. There's a sizeable gap around the Kenwood system if I put the original radio trim back on.

That's correct - you need a different dash trim if upgrading from a Stream or Bolero to the Columbus, it sounds like this Kenwood unit uses the Columbus trim.

Pre-facelift silver vRS one is 1Z0 858 069 R 2AU, matt black pre-facelift non-vRS one is 1Z0 858 069 C 9B9. I think I've got one of the latter unused in my loft somewhere if you want it.

Skodateile have said they can source a suitable trim for my car (silver nav trim for manual A/C) so just in the process of getting that organised, if it arrives and as expected then I can look at stereos beyond the Bolero. This Kenwood unit sounds appealing as the main reason for upgrading is better sound, the Stream MP3 is a fiddle at the moment as I don't have aux-in and no USB or SD card in and I've never liked the sound quality. I realise I can fit an aux-in but would prefer to use the head unit as I can't really adjust the mp3 player itself while driving and it would be convenient to have all my music stored within the unit. I lose the PDC display anyway with the Skoda units and I don't have Maxi-dot or climate control so I don't really lose much compared to the Skoda units.

I bit the bullet and have just tried fitting one of these, I was wondering if you ever encountered any capacity issues over USB? I tried connecting my 32GB mp3 player but in the folder view some songs are greyed out and they don't appear in the tag view. I can't think there's anything different about them as the unit definitely sees other mp3s which are the same type (such as downloaded from Amazon), the only pattern seems to be that it's the ones that have been added more recently that aren't working.

I was looking through your photos for fitting the GPS aerial, did you do it purely through opening the area at the top above the stereo or did you need to remove the glovebox as well? I tried doing the latter as I don't have any trim removal tools to get the bit at the top off but I couldn't get the glovebox to come away, it seemed to be secured to the left of its top corner so I assume I was doing something wrong.

Also if you installed the Bluetooth mic, where did you put it? The connection seems to be on the back but the mic looks like it should be at the front making it an odd place to have the connector.

Thanks,

John

Yeah, to mount the GPS antenna just take out the storage bin thing on the top of the dash - no need to take the glove-box out. BTW, for future reference, if you do need to remove the glovebox, you need to pop the flap off the side of the dash (like where the fuses go on the other end of the dash) and there's one more screw for the glovebox in there.

I've got he mic at the top of the A-pillar. It's pretty stealth. Cable's run through the dash over the steering column and up inside the A-pillar trim. Was really easy to route the cable. Just pulled it through via inside the fuse box cover, the storage bin by the driver's right knee and then from the side of the space where the head unit would normally sit.

How did you get the cable from the back of the stereo out to the steering column? I managed to get the storage box off and GPS antennae fitted but I wasn't seeing an obvious route out for the BT cable but this is all quite new to me. I did notice the flap to the left of the glovebox holding it on but couldn't seem to unclip to get it underneath although shouldn't be an issue now as the antennae seems to be working great where it is.

Thanks again for the thread by the way, now I've got it fitted and mostly working I'm very pleased with it particularly the sound quality which is much better than I was expecting from the speakers. Aside from getting the BT mic fitted the main issue is still trying to get this antennae cable fixed, I had the car into a garage for new tyres (a proper garage, not a Kwik-fit place) and noticed they fitted car stereos so thought I would ask but they hadn't heard of or seen the fakra connector before.
