TCS

Do you set the TCS to On or Off when in deep snow?

Any tips much appreciated.

I have read that the normal tyres work

but

TDI Scout came with Dunlop SP Sport 01 225/50 R17 94W not sure it that made any difference, never run a car with Dunlops before - as I have seen mentioned that the normal tyres are ok in deep snow but I have found the Dunlops a little wanting.

My experience is that TCS is good for controlling isolated spinning wheels, and so making sure that starts happen without any drama, in most conditions.

It's not so good when the snow is deep and you spin all four wheels to get moving - the problem is that the system cuts the power and reduces forward momentum.

The manual says to turn it off in deep loose snow or sand - sounds about right.

The deepest snow I have driven in was just above the tops of my wellies so I guess just over a foot. I left everything switched on & when pulling away didnt touch the throttle, just slowly raise the clutch & wait for the car to sort things out & slowly pull away, then ease in more throttle. Im running the Dunlops & have done 18.5K on them so fronts down to around 4mm, 5 on the rears. They now arent the best but I havent been stuck yet. . stopping seems to be more of an issue but thats to be expected on what are part worn "summer" tyres & I try & drive with that in mind

General concensus is that in deep snow you turn the TCS off so that the tyres can then spin and dig themselves down to the grippier surface i.e. the tarmac underneath.

Read the manual, I recall it has something to say about this topic - from memory, I think they only time they advise turning the system off is if you are trying to rock the car to get it going - not 100% on this though!

Thanks for the comments

I noted in the hand book about in deep snow turn the TCS off but I think the problem has been the compacted frozen snows under the soft snow that prevents the tyres punching through to the tarmac

I am about to read the other forum entries on tyres to see what comments there are on the best summer tyres for the Octavia Scout TDI

Try both, on and off. Twice TCS didn't help, but once it did. Depends how deep and whats under it.
