rear brake squeal fix

Featured Replies

Woooo no mooooo :)

Good work matey

How long does it take

All in all about an hour. Only because I took time to clean stuff while I had wheels off. Otherwise I would say half hour tops. The longest part is getting car raised and wheels off and back on again. Which to be fair you don't really need to do. Could just jack up and leave wheels on. But I needed to be able to see more and so removed wheels.

Thanks for that item reference! What makes the Alhambra springs better for the job, in your opinion?

Ok my buddy Lloyd asked me to get some springs to aid return of the rear handbrake mechanism from my local TPS. As the Bristol branch won't supply the public ! So I doubled up as my octy makes an embarrassing squeal when reversing also.

The part numbers are 1K0 615 295 and 1K0 615 296 about £5 inc VAT

So car jacked up and off with rear wheel. I did one side at a time. You will see from pic below that upper spring arm goes through handbrake release mechanism and just pokes through small hole in the bracket. The lower spring arm has a U shaped end that goes round the edge of the lower bracket.

To get the spring arm in the upper bracket and located in the hole correctly I found it necessary to bend the end of the spring arm to a more acute angle. From this.

To this.

Without doing this the spring would not locate into hole properly. And wouldn't work in the correct way.

Care must be taken when then compressing lower arm and positioning correctly on lower bracket. If you slip you may well have the spring embedded in your thumb or finger. I however managed to complete both sides without injury.

Also a good opportunity while wheels are off to clean inside of alloys and wheel arches etc.

With wheels back on and car back on the deck a quick drive to settle everything back in followed. The results are that the handbrake is now stiffer to raise due to the fitment of the springs. And releases with a more positive feel. The mooing noise when reversing has also now gone. Silence at last !

I had to bend that little lug in exactly the same way as well buddy.

interesting you did not feed the lower section of spring through the slot in the cable bracket to give a stronger return ?

As I also have the rear mooing fix kit (dampers) i did not have the slots so just ended up fitting springs over like you pics anyway.

Yeah at first I placed lower spring arm through cut out. But looking at it it looked as though it was under too much compression and was distorting spring coil out of shape. The way I have it will produce enough return and doesn't look stressed when handbrake is applied.

Time will tell if the spring is ok in the position I've used.

Hello guys, the thread is old but since I have suffered from the same problem in my Octavia RS '05 rear right break since 05/2014 when I renewed my pads and discs (even caliper in rear left), same "mooing" noise while reversing and somewhat same kind of noise while forwarding, I took my car to same place (yes retail garage) over and over again but they never found a problem. in 05/2015 I decided to try to change the caliper also to rear right and hand break wire was also changed at this time. They only managed to do difference for a few days. In 01/2016 I was so annoyed that I complained to them AGAIN about the same problem when another 30 000km had passed and they changed the pads again for free of charge. Took like 2-3 weeks when the noise came back. Now last 1-2 weeks the noise was so loud and embarrassing I changed the retail garage to another one and their discovery was the WHEEL BEARING. They said that it is not broken but at some point while turning the wheel around it seemingly hits something and they even consulted the importer mechanic from next door and decided to change the bearing. Now I'm off to get the car which they say is most likely fixed since they didn't hear that mooing noise anymore! Thumbs up!

So, there are at least 3 suggested solutions to the problem in this thread!

  1. Different and updated pads
  2. Improved caliper springs
  3. Wheel bearing

I've experienced this delightful (not) sound today and would welcome any further suggestions or definitive answers as to what is causing the issue. Definitely embarrassing!

I've fitted new pads, discs, wheel bearings, overhauled callipers, new fluid and fitted the extra release springs, all at the same time so a clean bill of health..................still mooing!

Oh man, that's my worst nightmare! Such expense to get back to the same position.

We might have to be the first group who revert back to drum systems 😂🤣

They obviously are all prone to mooing but didn’t do this when they were new. I can only assume that if you fitted brand new calipers where the pistons might retract very fractionally more than a caliper that is some years old then the problem will not manifest itself.

If I’m wrong, who knows what the problem is!

New rear calipers anyone?

Well, that's a solution that's been suggested to me by a much more knowledgeable fella than I.

Makes a lot of sense, too, as the spring will be a proper faff to change.

I'll give it a go sometime soon though :)
