Thanks for that item reference! What makes the Alhambra springs better for the job, in your opinion?

Just to let people know - I fitted the 'revised' pads with the rubber backing about 3 weeks ago, and they have since started to groan again. They seem to do it worse when there is moisture in the air or the discs are rusty.

Also, if you turn the wheel by hand, you can hear the noise and feel it vibrating - Acts as a tuning fork like Tech1e said.

Gonna try the handbrake springs tho, might even bolt a weight of some kind to the caliper and seem what happens. :D

what car is this fitted to? will the part number on the box fit the mk1 octy vrs?

Thats just an expensive version of what springs do

Kind of.

The springs just mask the problem. The weights actually cure it. It's caused by the natural resonance of the rear beam, and no spring can fix that properly. The spring does help though by stopping the pads dragging on the disc.

yes

yes

cheers mate - sorry if it sounded like a dumb question :D

as suspected the squeek has returned! it does seem worse when its wet. i read a thread on here a while ago about fitting springs to the calipers but that was for a fabia. i ruled trying this out just for the fact that when i released the handbrake the lever on the caliper seemed to be returning all the way back to its stop. is your car still squeek free dubdean? and did you check if your handbrake was fully releasing before trying the springs? the comments on the thread i read was that the lever wasnt going all the way back and so fitting these springs would force it back.

hi, i have a skoda octavia 55reg and i have recently changed pads and discs to rear, now i am getting loud sqeeling from my drivers side rear, do you guys think this could be the same problem with the springs ??

anyone had the noise whilst going forward?

I have what sounds like a sealion in the wheelarch, but i happens randomly but quite alot under normal driving forward!

Is it all the time or just when going slowly? After you drive for a while if you put your hand on the rear wheels is one hotter than the other?

Did you wind the piston back far enough?

It starts screaming when it gets hot definatly, especially on motorway, also the wheel that has the noise is really hot and sometimes even smells like burning

The caliper is sticking then. It could be that the handbrake is not releasing fully, that the caliper is seized or the piston wasn't would back far enough when the new pads were fitted.

You need to take it apart and check it. The pad if probably toast aswell as the disc and maybe the brake fluid too

An old thread bumped, but I have just (defrosting as I type) fitted the two VW springs part numbers 7m0615295 and 7m0615296 to my 2003 Octavia VRS. Immediate impressions are that they return the handbrake cable to its 'off' position better, and I do not have the mooing I had half an hour ago. Time will tell if it is a permanent solution, but for the price - £2.09 + VAT per spring, its worth it to try. I ordered mine from my local VW dealer, who will order any VAG parts I want, providing I have paret numbers. Hope this helps someone suffering the ear-piercing noise!

I tried this fix some weeks ago and it just hasn't cured the problem fully. Driving me crazy. Trying to get the Skoda "fix" kit but my main dealer has told me today that it is no longer showing that these are available!

Tried chamfering the pads as well as making sure the pistons are not seized. The discs are in excellent order and the handbrake is not binding.

The more i think about it the more it infuriates me. All in the mind I suppose and I should just turn up the stereo.

I now resort to pulling up the handbrake a little if reversing when around people, if only to avoid the embarassment of driving what they percieve as being a pile of crap! Add the noise to the Skoda badge and to the un-educated that is usually the result.

I recently changed my rear discs and pads before i changed them i had no noise at all ,i fitted mintex standard discs and pads and straight away i had mooing going forwards and backwards slowly as i speed up it went away,i didnt get hot discs or calipers just this awfull noise i had wound the pistons back properly and greased the pads and sliders i was gutted so i bought a set of these vw rear springs W7HO 615 295A / W7HO 615 296 these springs give u the soft hand brake as the the other part no gives a stiff hand brake ,i fitted the springs in ten mins and only cost me £5.02 and no more mooing a big thums up from me for the springs ,

Ok my buddy Lloyd asked me to get some springs to aid return of the rear handbrake mechanism from my local TPS. As the Bristol branch won't supply the public ! So I doubled up as my octy makes an embarrassing squeal when reversing also.

The part numbers are 1K0 615 295 and 1K0 615 296 about £5 inc VAT

So car jacked up and off with rear wheel. I did one side at a time. You will see from pic below that upper spring arm goes through handbrake release mechanism and just pokes through small hole in the bracket. The lower spring arm has a U shaped end that goes round the edge of the lower bracket.

To get the spring arm in the upper bracket and located in the hole correctly I found it necessary to bend the end of the spring arm to a more acute angle. From this.

To this.

Without doing this the spring would not locate into hole properly. And wouldn't work in the correct way.

Care must be taken when then compressing lower arm and positioning correctly on lower bracket. If you slip you may well have the spring embedded in your thumb or finger. I however managed to complete both sides without injury.

Also a good opportunity while wheels are off to clean inside of alloys and wheel arches etc.

With wheels back on and car back on the deck a quick drive to settle everything back in followed. The results are that the handbrake is now stiffer to raise due to the fitment of the springs. And releases with a more positive feel. The mooing noise when reversing has also now gone. Silence at last !

Woooo no mooooo :)

Good work matey

How long does it take
