Rear Number Plate Light Problem

Featured Replies

Hello, I hope you all had a great Christmas!

A couple of months ago - or that's how long it seems - my near-side rear number plate bulb blew. I've changed these before, no problem, so I got a new bulb fitted. Thing was though, it still didn't work, so I took the new bulb out and checked to see if that had blown too. It hadn't. My other number plate light was still going, so I thought that it may be a fuse until I realised that both lights run off the same fuse.

The offending bulb holder was a bit corroded, so I gave that a clean with a wire brush and tried again. Still nothing. So my next idea was to disconnect the bulb holders from both lights and plug the good one onto the bad side. Annoyingly this revealed that the bad bulb holder has corroded worse than I first thought because when I disconnected it from the plug at the end of the wire one of the pins snapped off and stayed stuck in the plug on the end of the wire! I've reconnected the broken bulb holder and left it alone, just running with the good light until I figure out what to do.

And that is my question - what can I do to fix it? I think it will need the wires cutting and a new plug connecting, but I don't know if this is something I can do myself (I have rewired headlights in the past), or even if the parts are available.

Any ideas? Is it a trip to my local Skoda dealer and will it cost much? My worst fear is that it may be a new wiring loom in the tailgate if there isn't enough length left on the current wire for it to be cut down for the new connector - and I bet that isn't cheap! :(

You could always solder a new piece of wire on...

Buy a pair (or just one) rear number-plate light unit from Skoda or from a breakers yard.

Would save faffing about with dodgy light fitting's. emoticon-0148-yes.gif
