Daytime Running lights

Featured Replies

Is it possible to have day time running lights on a 2007 model? Like sides and rear number plate lights?

Thanks

OP, car looks cool. Looks nicer than a thick strip of LED imho

1) Take it to another Skoda dealer, preferably one that has a better knowledge of the products they sell.

2) Take it back, tell them you know they can be enabled, just not how, and ask them to ring Skoda UK if they can't work it out.

3) Find a local Briskoda member with VCDS and ask them to enable them for you.

4) Ring Skoda UK customer services, explain to them the problems you are having and ask them to contact your dealer and tell them what they need to do.

I have tried two dealers already with the same results and Customer Services just suggested the two dealers I have already tried.

I think now I may wait until later in the year when the law changes and maybe they will have had more of an idea

Yes, I understand that if you have Maxidot you can select this setting yourself, if not it is a trip to the dealers.

A word of warning not many dealers will a clue what you are trying to ask them to do, some even struggle to activate the designated DRL's next to the fog lights on the facelift Octavia's!

There are two different settings of DRL that use the standard headlights rather than the additional designated DRL's that are fitted next to the foglights on later FL models.

One is called 'Scandinavian' which uses sidelights, headlights, tail lights and number plate lights - essentially the same as selecting dipped headlights yourself. On this setting the lights switch on automatically with either the ignition or with the engine running (can't remember which).

The other DRL option uses just headlights (no tail lights). They only come on with the engine running and the handbrake off.

No maxidot and not even going to entertain a dealer. Basingstoke were useless when I wanted them to reset my variable service. The lady on reception said I don't think we can do that! How did you reset cars you service???

I am looking for someone who can help local to Basingstoke, but the 2 people I pm'd on here haven't replied :S

Found in the Owners Manual, no need to use VCDS.

Switching on daylight driving lights.

Switch on the ignition without turning the light switch out of position 0.

Activate function daylight driving lights.

Pull the turn signal light lever towards the steering wheel up to 3 seconds after switching on the ignition and at the same time, slide it to the top and hold it in this position for at least 3 seconds.

Deactivate function daylight driving lights.

Pull the turn signal light lever towards the steering wheel up to 3 seconds after switching on the ignition and at the same time, slide it to the bottom and hold it in this position for at least 3 seconds.

When the daylight driving lights are switched on, the side lights and the low beam come on together.

On vehicles which are fitted with bulbs for daylight driving lights* in the fog lights, the parking lights do not come on when activating the function daylight driving lights.

When the daylight driving lights are switched on, the illumination of the instrument cluster is switched off, however, it is switched on in the AUTO position when it is dark and the low beam shines with full brightness (100 % of the performance).

The manual shows how to turn them on and off but you still have to get them activated with either VCDS or a dealer - well I certainly had to on my car. Dealer (Simpsons,Colne) did it in about 5 mins no problem.

If it needs activation via VCDS, why put it in the manual in the first place; As that will only cause customers to complain that it's not working.

Which to be quiet honest is stupid.

According to Skoda UK they were fitted to new cars even though not a legal requirement until next month, so the manual told customers how to turn them on/off, but they were not factory activated so it was down to dealers to activate them. I understand that, but when they are legally required on all new cars then it would be illegal to run without them - sounds like a bit of Skoda logic !!!!

Wow, lots of different ideas about activation ?. After research I found that the VCDS is required to add the function to the maxidot system, once this is done you are able to switch the DRL's on and off via the newly aquired menu. I took my car back to the Skoda dealer (Startin, Bowling green garage in Worcester) and they knew what to do and enabled the DRL's using VCDS whilst I sat in reception. It took 10 mins and they did not charge - result. I am deaply concerned that other Skoda dealerships are unable to competently use the VCDS system ?.

Cheers

In the olden days when I was a young chap and felt the need to bolt extra lights on my car lights fitted low down were illegal in the UK unless used in bad weather.

I wonder if that's still the case and therefore why the fog lamp mounted DRL bulbs aren't enabled as standard?

My running lights are enabled and I get sides during the day and headlights at night :)

Shame the dash or radio doesn't light up

Oh and as soon as you apply the handbrake the lights go off

You have the North American DRL setting. AFAIK this is not legal in Europe.

Because their use in the UK is not a legal requirement until later this month.

Even then Skoda do not have to fit them or activate them on the current Octavia as the law only applies to new models launched after this date.

If Skoda decide to start activating DRL's for UK Octavia's from the factory it's because they want to not because they have to, until of course they introduce a new model.

What's the difference please? Would like the dashlights on all the time, is that possible to do?

You should try Scandinavian DRL's, as mentioned above this includes tail lights and is activated automatically when the engine is running rather than with the handbrake as per the NA DRL setting you currently have selected...

Not sure about interior lights though...

Has anyone in the Southampton area managed to get the DRL's in the foglights activated?

I have tried both local dealers to get them activated on my Dad's Sep' 60 Reg Elegance and neither seem to think its possible. They both state because the Elegance has so much equipment its not possible. I know this isn't true as I have seen them working on other cars on the road and on Youtube clips.

All one of them managed to do was set up the Skandinavian mode which is basically light turning on your headlights manually - pointless.

I know I could get someone with a laptop and the right tools to do it, but my Dad really wants it done via a Dealer.

It is clear that the dealers down there are clueless, so why bother with them?

Just get someone with VCDS to do it (this is what some dealers use anyway as it is both easier to use and can do more than the official VAS equipment)

I have an elegance and went to my local dealer in Derby, who aren't exactly renowned for great service on here, and they too enabled DRL's in about 20 mins without any charge. Perhaps you could ask your local dealer to call one of the other dealers who have done this so they can find out how its done?

It's an interesting observation, and I was thinking about this the other day. I saw a new Merc with DRL on, and they were ridiculously bright, far brighter and far-reaching than any fog lights I've ever seen, so I'm not surprised people running with them are being flashed by other drivers and occasionally pulled over by uninformed police officers.

So despite the fact that previously, driving around with your sidelights and fog lights on (as the boy racers like to do) was considered completely illegal, and I often heard tails of people being pulled over and issued with a notice, or at least being told to switch em off, now they're introducing DRL, which are often brighter than fog lights, as a legal requirement!
