Daytime Running lights

Featured Replies

I have just purchased a new 2010 shape Ocvtavia elegance hatch and want the DRLs similar to my last car which was an Audi A4. I have seen the flexible strips of LED lights on sale in Halfords and am considering the best way to fit. I think they will look better fitted within the front fog lamps like the VRS. Has anyone done this or does anyone know how to remove the front fogs, are the front fog lamps sealed units. Would appreciate some advice on this.

Cheers

Your 2010 car already has DRL's, they may simply need activating. They are housed in the foglight enclosure, on the outer edge you'll see a separate bulb.

Boring............. :giggle:

I have had a 2010 Skoda Octavia Elegance since March. Super car, but many items on it seem to be connected only if another more expensive feature has been specified too. I have searched the handbook, but still cannot discover how to change the clock from Summertime to Wintertime settings; cannot find how to display all items on the display panel, and cannot switch on the daylight driving bulbs. The bulbs are fitted in the foglight housings, which is not a sealed unit, because details are given to enable the bulbs to be changed. Switching them on (activating) is supposed to be via the indicator stalk, by pulling towards the steering wheel and then moving up to the top within 3 seconds and holding there for a further 3 seconds. Hope this helps, but it does not work yet on my car.

The car seems to be over-complicated, and the handbook does not always explain clearly what and what is not included in the spec.

Clock, you turn the odometer reset switch to the left to advance hours and the right to advance minutes (It is in the manual).

Fitting leds on the standard octavia bumper dont normally look that good..................u could either

1) start the bulbs provided in the fog lamp cluster (via vcds or maxi dot)

2) or you can purchase a vrs bumper of superskoda..

The DRL's on the FL Octavia (vRS excluded) need to be first activated by your dealer (or a friendly member with VCDS).

Once this is done the instructions given in the manual to turn them on and off will work.

For some reason Skoda have chosen not to activate them in the factory until they become mandatory here in the UK sometime in 2011.

I have seen the flexible strips of LED lights on sale in Halfords.

I've seen too many cars with DIY strips of LED's fitted in, on, under or around the headlight / grill / bumper and they just don't look right.

If they aren't OEM then it just looks like you are trying too hard.

I saw a BMW X5 only today with some blue fairy lights glued under the headlight. I had to chuckle to myself.

Please, just activate the OEM tungsten bulbs already fitted to your car.

If you do fit some, whilst in Halfords don't forget the chrome windscreen wiper blades, fluorescent tubes for under the sills, bonnet mounted washer jets with the inbuilt blue LED and some stick-on letters for the boot lid to spell out your initials :giggle:

WoW.... Thanks all for your comments. I was hoping to fit the LED light strips inside the fog lamp lense as they might look a bit shabby attached to the outside of the lense. I can see that there is an extra bulb in the front fogs, but as you have mentioned they are not activated. Are there any members with the VCS in the west mids area who can activate for me ?

I get your point lol Thats why I want to fit them properly. I thinbk the LED type are more effective than the single bulbs inside the fog lamps though. As for ther other lighting parafinalia, haaaaa ahaa ..... i dont think so

Thanks

Once you activate the standard DRL's you can replace the 21W tungsten halogen bulbs for newer LED bulbs which do look much better if you prefer the Audi look.

There is a recent thread on here somewhere with fitting instructions and pictures, I'll try and find it...

OK so I managed to get my Skoda dealer to activate the DRL's found in the fog lamps. I changed the bulbs for a pair of multi LED and also added a LED bar just above the lamps. I think is works well, giving better visibility to other road users without being overpowering like those found on the Audi 'S' line.

How can i add an image to this post ?? as clicking the 'insert image' opens up an URL request ?

You need to use a hosting site such as photobucket.

One uploaded you get a direct link that you can copy and paste into the URL request on here.

Looking forward to seeing the results, I was thinking nice job until I read that you'd also added a length of additional LED's too :smirk:

...I'll reserve judgement until you decide to share!

Unfortunately I think LED-style DRL's are going the way of 'Lexus' rear lights. These looked pretty good when they first appeared, but progressively more 'downmarket' as they appeared on old Corsa's and 107's. I don't think even Lexus fit 'Lexus-style' rear lights now, do they?

There are some ghastly LED DRL's appearing. One of the Citroen models has very bright vertical strips of LEDs each side of the bumper. They look really naff. Not to mention all the strings and strips of LEDs that boy racers are sticking to the fronts of their cars.

Its a pity, because I think DRL's are potentially a good safety feature, particularly in the poor daytime weather we get for about half the year. Personally I'm in favour of just putting the dipped headlights on.

Hi All

Here is a picture of a friends car who also wanted a Led stripe with the 68 mini Led bulb for DRL

hpim9303.jpg

My Led reverse lights, same bulb as the led DRL, used to be a H8 for the foglight, the Led bulb was alot brighter compared to the DRL bulb because it ran on the fogbulb at 38w when the DRL is only 21w.

I have managed to increase the bulb intensity to 110%, it can actually go to 121%.

Look at the picture Nº 2 DRL Led and Nº 3 H8 Led on fog

I have attached the photos of my new Octavia with standard DRL's activated with new LED bulbs and LED strips. I fitted the LED strips to indicate that the lamps in the fog lamp lenses are in fact daytime running lights and not standard fog lamps being used when there is no fog !, this should save any more drivers flashing me

Hi Marty,

Where did you get the LED bulbs & strips from, if you don't mind me asking?

I have to say they look pretty good B) & may convince me to go Elegance & save some money over the VRs!!

The LED bulbs were a direct replacement for the Skoda fitted originals and were purchased from car mod shop Ltd on their Ebay store ( PY21W XENON WHITE CANBUS 27 LED BULBS DRL) at a cost of £19 for the pair. I thought that was a little expensive but they will outlast the normal bulbs by years. The LED strips were purchased of Ebay and cost £15.99 for the pair (Daylight Running Sidelights 24 led x 2)

I wired the additional LED strips into the existing DRL terminals so they function as one unit.

Personally i don't really see the point in daylight running lights. I think is just become fashionable and people now think they need them.

Being a biker as well as a driver i tend to see things from a slightly different perspective, when on a bike one of the few safety measures we have is to have the headlamp on dip. Infact all motorcycle manufactures as standard make them come on with the ignition. However now every driver and their dog have their lights all all day every day making the motorbiker fade into the background even more.

Surely while driving a car we only really need our lights on when its dark or foggy (i know there are exceptions!)?

They'll be law in the UK on newly introduced models from next month so they are here to stay whether we like it or not.

The additional visibility enjoyed by motorbikes running with dipped headlights has also been proven to benefit other road users in the same way when DRL's are fitted.

Whilst I appreciate this may reduce the advantage to motorbikes there are a lot more cars on the road than motorbikes so in theory the overall reduction of injuries and fatalitles should improve.

OK so I managed to get my Skoda dealer to activate the DRL's found in the fog lamps.

What did you ask them to activate when you went to your dealer?

I am still trying to get the DRL in the foglights activated on my Dad's 2010 Elegance, but all they managed to get enabled was dipped headlights which included the dashlights and tail/number plate lights - in otherwords as if he had turned on his headlights manually. Luckily he managed to turn them off on his MAXIDOT

He tried to show them what he wanted and they scratched their heads and said "they are foglights not DRL's" even when he pointed out the second bulb :S

Any suggestions much appreciated :)

Any suggestions much appreciated :)

1) Take it to another Skoda dealer, preferably one that has a better knowledge of the products they sell.

2) Take it back, tell them you know they can be enabled, just not how, and ask them to ring Skoda UK if they can't work it out.

3) Find a local Briskoda member with VCDS and ask them to enable them for you.

4) Ring Skoda UK customer services, explain to them the problems you are having and ask them to contact your dealer and tell them what they need to do.

I think DRL's on any vehicle (car or bike) increase the distant visibility significantly and I dont really see your views on being beneficial to bikes and not cars ?. The use of DRL's is going to be mandatory on new vehicles shortly. This is due to research carried out into collisions on our roads, therefore you can assume there is data to suggest that this will lead to a reduction in RTC fatality which I fully support.
