Should I buy

Featured Replies

Ive been looking at buying a new Yeti & been looking for a 2.0 diesel 4x4 version , with the wait quoted 20 weeks for manual & 30 weeks for the auto box . The dealer offered me the yeti I test drove , which is a 2.0 TDI CR [140] SE 4x4 5dr DSG for under 20k .

Its a standard SE & the only options I was looking at adding was the :-

Hill hold

Off road button

Rough road package

I was looking at getting the manul , but the auto is only £25 a year more on the tax & 4 mpg less on fuel

The pros are that this vehice will be avalable in March & that means I don't have to have my current vehicle taxed & Mot'd plus they will hold the part ex price on mine . but is the standard SE any good without these options ?

Ive had Landrovers for over ten years now , so want some thing that can handle mud & snow ( tyres will be replaced )

My other option is buying nearly new & finding one with these options, but the prices are often more than buying new

Any advice appreciated

Not sure were you are in the UK or your willingness to travel or in fact if you need 140 & DSG but for example there's an Elegance 110 4x4 with spare that has all the extras you need as standard My link for under 20K

Otherwise yes I would go with the demo if you are happy with the deal.

Hope that's of help

This sounds a pretty good deal if your p/x price is reasonable although if you're coming from a Land Rover you might consider the wait for a new Yeti is worth it to have hill hold, off road and rough road extras.

"James " at Allams is an obvious first contact choice.I think the Off road button is fairly common, though the rough road package less so.No doubt it can be added by fitting the individual parts . Finally don't be swayed too much by all the keen DSG'ers on here. The 6 speed manual box is superb also... :giggle: ( welcome by the way!)

Raider,

like you I have come over from the Freelander fold, and bought an ex-demo 140 diesel 4x4.

My prefered list would have included the same as you but wasn't available, and to be perfectly honest I haven't missed any of them at all. If you know what you are doing then not having the off-road button will not be a hinderance. I never found I needed anything extra underneath with the FL and since the Yeti ground clearance is the same, I'm not worrying there either.

I've put the Yeti into similar places to my FL's, and it has coped just as well. The only thing I miss is to be able to get some proper All Terrain tyres in 17", but then I am probably more adventurous than most Yeti owners will be!

Where are you in the UK?

Thanks for the responces & Its good to find someone in the same boat ;)

Im on my third Freelander now & if the running costs weren't so crazy , I would have another one .I used to do lots of off road driving with my first one & see that it will be intresting getting decent AT's for the Yeti . I don't do much off road driving now ( occational byways ) but still want to be able to get about in the snow & ice .

Does it work the same as a Freelander but just without having the hill decent control ?

Im in Surrey

Graham's comments must be most pertinent, with his experience and duplicating your situation as he does. I find the strange 17" standard wheel and tyre size in the Yeti such a hassle too - for all-terrains or winters - the former not available at all, really, for the supplied alloys. I come from a number of recent Defenders, and do a fair amount of rough track and, these days, 'lighter' off road stuff - not hard core, but all round 'farm' stuff, and have not found the Yeti wanting yet - I haven't used the off road button at all in all the recent weather. I am kind of suspicious of not knowing what it is doing, for one thing, being used to more 'direct' systems, and simply don't think of it! Although I was originally pleased to have it the RRP, I dont think it' has actually had to contribute anything - I sometimes wonder how much of a mud trap all the bits are as I plough through muddy ruts, in fact! The amount of mud I sluice out after a pressure wash tells me - quite a lot!

You could say 'a Yeti in the hand...' etc. but then you are having to wait perhaps half the time, say up to ten weeks, to get something which is not quite what you want. In spite of what I have said above, I personally would wait to get what I wanted - I have a habit of regretting haste afterwards. But I would definately speak to James, and take a good look around generally, before committing to anything. I walked into a dealer and drove off with mine 1 week later, spec pretty much as I wanted - rare perhaps, but it did happen!

Having read the other comments and especially knowing now where you are, i would echo the 'speak to James' clan. Although I am in North Yorkshire, I will almost definitely go to Allams for my next Skoda - customer service means a great deal (in every sense).

A lot of Land Rover people (or ex LR people) seem to have gone for the Yeti.

I would hold on and get what you want, particularly if weather conditions are an issue. In a month or two the bad weather will be over for another 10 months...

2nd hand prices are (as said) like new because of the wait. Crazy. So you'll actually get more depreciation than on a new one due to paying the same but having an older vehicle.

I had Freelander's for 6 years, plus previous to that I did some demo'ing them via one of the ALRC Clubs, so perhaps was fairly "adventurous" with mine. The Yeti has been used on several green lane trips, is regularly driven along forestry tracks, and is about to go out on a 4x4 Response training weekend. I might be taking my BORDA training certificate in mine, which will probably be a first for an SUV!

The Yeti is much more economical than the Freelander. Fuel consumption is much better, and the VED and insurance are lower. Compared to a Freelander 2 the Yeti is much cheaper. I looked at the FL2 but found it much to big and expensive.

The Yeti drive system I think is actually better than that on the Freelander 1, even without the "problem" of that's VCU. It seems to work quicker and in a more progressive manner. Even on the wide 17" road rollers I haven't got stuck yet, even in the snow. Certainly I will be getting 16" wheels and winter tyres next winter, but that is more for the braking capacity, not the traction. One good thing about the Yeti system is that you can be a bit of a "vandal" and do hand brake turns and doughuts, that you can't in a Freelander (on private ground of course).

Do I miss the HDC? Not really. Although the Freelander system is very good I used to find it sometimes too fast, and have found that sticking the Yeti in 1st is just as good. The engine braking on the diesel is very good with a manual, but don't know about the DSG.

Edit:

try and find the thread "Yeti Adventure Wales" for some photos of a very mild green lane run I organised last summer.

I can't really help with the ex-demo car since I don't have a 140DSG to sell you I'm afraid but if you are looking at new ones feel free to drop me an email with the spec you want so I can quote you and we'll go from there, assuming you haven't already got a preferred dealer in mind but I'm in Surrey too so you're probably not a million miles away.

If I read the OP's initial post correctly he is looking for a CR140 manual but has been offered an 'in the pipeline' CR140 with DSG.

Does that change the scenario or is it the case that any immediate/short delivery diesel Yeti is as rare as hen's teeth?

I check every day at least once for Yetis that are either about to be built (within 4 weeks) or Yetis that have been built that are available and if I can grab them I will do but in the last 3-4 weeks they have been getting fewer and fewer available. I managed to find a 1.2TSi DSG with a panoramic sunroof last month that should be our new demo, if anyone wants that in 3 months? Tried to get an Elegance DSG TDi but I don't think that will make it to us without someone else nabbing it back again.

All Skoda dealers are like Hyenas fighting over whatever we can get from the factory!

If you can find something that is in the pipeline that is roughly what you want I'd go for that as otherwise you'll be waiting ages. If you want to get something a bit quicker but still a factory order go for a 1.8TSi as they will be built a fair bit quicker than a TDi being that the TSi engine is more readily available.

I would echo the comments of Llanigraham. I have owned Range Rovers and Discoveries, an Xtrail and an Isuzu Trooper; all have been used off-road including tank training grounds on Salisbury Plain. A few months ago I decided to trade in my wife's Fabia for a 4x4 in readinesss for the bad weater this year. The Skoda Fabia had served us well and I oculd not buy a Yeti without a long wait. My garage had a manual SE CR140 4x4 in stock and although I had wanted the off-road button (and a heated front screen) I purchased the one available.

I have not been disappointed. I did buy a set of steel 16" wheels and Nokian winter tyres to replace the 17" summer tyres (why on earth does Skoda fit these as standard to some models - a fashion statement??). We live in the country and our road was not gritted an until this last week has been covered with snow and ice. The Yeti has proved faultless - grip has been exceptional. The off-road button would have been redundant as the engine gear ratios and sensible driving is all that is needed. Great car and comfortable. (My personal Mercedes has remained in our garage - rear wheel drive and lots of torque spell disaster in snow!)

If an 'Ex Demonstrator' or similar is an option for you there are nearly 30 2.0L TDI Yeti on Skoda's website that are less then one year/10,000 miles old as here;- http://www.skoda.net.r66.co.uk/Results.aspx (you might have to reselect options of age, mileage, engine etc).

Maybe something there of iterests?

no, but there are quite a few 4x4's in that lot.

just not sure if i would buy 2nd hand for more than the cost new.

but then we're both lucky, we have ours already and the 4 months i waited for harry seemed a very long time.

37 diesel Yeti's:

Shame you can't specify 4x4!

Well I've just done a rough count and got 14 TDI 4x4; think the best value is the one I listed above, as there's only 3 including that one for less than 20K; it's by far the newest and a nice Elegance spec.

Oh and anyone looking for a DSG 4x4 with a sunroof :o then there appears to be one here Elegance in Candy White B)

the spec list for that one says it has cloth seats!

afaik the elegance comes standard with leather.

maybe a typo but if the OP is interested then doublecheck the spec

The photos show leather and the reg suggests that it comes from Skoda fleet rather than being a dealer demonstrator.

Noticed the number of used Yetis on the SUK site is falling again; a few have obviously gone over the holiday.

Thanks very much everyone for your advice ;)

I have decided to go for the demo model & have also asked for them to do the protective film mentioned in another thread here . It should be ready for collection on the 1st March :)

Well done, you'll be happy with your Yeti!
