power steering light come on and steering becomes manual

Featured Replies

hi, i got a skoda fabia 1.9tdi 2004

sometimes in the morning the power steering light comes on and i have no power steering

i read other peoples problems about lights flickering and electric problems. i have no other symptoms just power steering stop working

would it be the steering angle sensor or could it be other things?

i look forward to your reply, martyn

Could be the steering angle sensor, or battery. The PAS takes a lot of electrical current and if your battery cannot deliver that then the system is disabled. If the PAS only does this after starting first thing I would suspect the battery rather than the angle sensor especially if your battery is original (ie. 6 years old)

Hi mate, welcome to the forum!

I have a PAS problem on my Fabia Classic 1.4MPi which comes and goes.

People sugest it is either your battery or the PAS sensor that is to blame. However just this morning a mechanc poped round and said that mostly likely my alternator is giving up.

Let us know how you get on

Edit: Check battery first winter finishes them off if they are old

thanks for your reply, i have seen no sign of it being the battery as it starts fine every morning and nothing dims down

Mine starts every morning too even in -7 temps and everythnig works fine-ish... except the steering.

Get a mechanic to check your alternator

i'm a qualified mechanic

to check the alternator when the engine running put a volt meter across the battery and should be between 13.44 and 14.44 volts

to check battery you put volt meter across termals when switched of should be between 12.5 and 13.00 volts

ive checked both and there fine soo thinking could be the sensor

grrrrr

In my case on the 2004vRS the dealer suggested it was the PAS sensor but he ended up changing the rack!

My VRS done this on the first frosty morning of this winter and it was the battery in the end up mate

The car even started ok fist time with it but when i switched the car off to try and clear the fault it wouldn't start again hence knowing it was the battery.

The power steering light in my fabia used to come on and steering sometimes lost the power assistance.. I fixed it by changing the sensor. I suspected the sensor was at fault though because I could be sitting at traffic lights and I would hear the PAS pump working and the lights would flicker.
