MOT - how far can you drive a car to an MOT ?

Featured Replies

Odd question really, but does anyone know how far a car can be driven to an MOT ?

The car is Insured, but doesn't have an MOT, so is SORN.

The law would seem to state that this is the ONLY circumstance whereby a SORN vehicle can be driven (on the road), but doesn't seem to state how far.

The MOT station would be roughly 250-300 miles away :o

It's a "reasonable" distance. I'm afraid whichever way you look at it, that's not a reasonable distance ;)

i think you get 7 days grace for mot. if you can prove documents and that your going to get it mot'ed you should be ok, if you get pulled. plus i'm not sure police know when your mot is due as you need a valid mot to insure your car.

Sorry, but I've never seen such a factually incorrect post.

Book an MOT at every 25 miles on way lol

Thats going to be a trailer job unless you can get it MOT'd up there, THEN drive it down? There must be some of those instant MOT type places nearby the seller?

Sorry, but I've never seen such a factually incorrect post.

why do you say that? my insurance was due feb last year. so you need mot for insuring vehicle. found out i had no mot by 2 weeks. never was stopped once....

You must take a direct route to a local MOT station (local is considered reasonable in court).

You can't take it to a garage to be fixed first.

You must have booked an appointment before you set off.

You can be nicked for any defects present on your car as you travel to the MOT station.

It must be taxed and insured.

Robo-bar-steward scan your car using ANPR Automatic Number Plate Regonition system.

Tells the little SOB's whether its insured, Taxed, MOT'd, got any 'alerts' issued, and what you had for tea last night ...

Car would be going that distance to a garage to fix the car to get in through the MOT ...

Chicken and egg scenario ...Can't get TAX cos MOT run out ... isn't passing MOT cos failing emissions ... need to get it to propper mapper & tuner to get it through MOT ...

Only decent mappers are 250-300 miles away ...

You do not need a current MOT for insuring a car.

You do not have any "grace".

You cannot drive a car on the road without an MOT unless on its way to a (local) MOT testing station.

Whether you got stopped or not is irrelevant.

You must take a direct route to a local MOT station (local is considered reasonable in court).

You can't take it to a garage to be fixed first.

You must have booked an appointment before you set off.

You can be nicked for any defects present on your car as you travel to the MOT station.

It must be taxed and insured.

That's the first sensible and considered reply. Perfect apart from the last line as it can be declared SORN on it's way to the test centre, but NOT to be driven on the way to get it taxed, or to tesco to buy some milk and bread on the way home, or back home again if it fails.

Unless your nearest MOT (or reasonably nearest) is 250 miles away.. Then you are going to need a trailer to take it.

Why do you need to take it to that specific MOT station? Why not pick a local one to the vehicle? All MOT's are now standardised, so a warning / failure in one MOT station should be picked up as a warning / failure in another one.

Is this in Devon perchance? (Just spotted your location) What about seeing Matt @ Volkscraft on Marsh Barton, Exeter, with it to see why it is playing up?

Volkscraft

I wouldn't trust him to clean my windscreen

Got him to fit my brakes - what a s h 1 t e piece of work - doesn't know how to bleed brakes

refused to accept the brake system was air-locked

surprised to hear that. Never heard a bad thing about him. He is an ex-master Tech from Seat.

Well that's not the same as taking it to an MOT testing station.

As said earlier - you cannot take a car that has no MOT to a garage to be fixed, unless (and someone may correct me on this one) you take to an MOT, it fails, you then book it into a garage and take it there (again would have to be a local one).

I know some MOT testing stations do not perform certain work - I had a car which needed some welding doing and the MOT station only did brakes, tyres, exhausts, batteries etc.. so I enquired and was informed that I could take to another local garage but NOT drive it on the roads in the meantime.

I checked with a VOSA friend and he said I could drive it home, and then back to the garage when they were open (as the MOT failed last thing on a Friday), but NOT drive it on the road in the meantime.

If stopped I had to prove that It had only just failed and I had it booked into a local garage.

sorry mot for tax and tax for insurance. still drove for 2 weeks with no mot.

That's was the intended method ...

Has been used locally twice already ...

I'm sorry but you're still wrong!

For tax you need MOT and insurance. For insurance you don't even need a driving licence.

If a car fails an MOT you can't legally drive it anywhere, not home, not to a garage, nowhere.

Traffic law is black and white. There is no grace and there is no "it'll be ok".

No doubt people do it but it's not legal and it's not above board.

I'm not trying to be annoying, but briskoda is easily found on google etc, and misinformation could cause someone to break the law without knowing.

hence my reason for this thread

Car transporter it is then ... more $$$ ...

The fact you were lucky enough not to get pulled doesn't make it legal

Robo-bar-steward scan your car using ANPR Automatic Number Plate Regonition system.Tells the little SOB's whether its insured

Very blinkered to refer to the Police as such - please put me right if I've misinterpreted the reference

Why does the fact that the police have the technology of ANPR and the insurance database justify such small-minded condemnation?

I'm sure you'd be the first one to complain if an uninsured driver wiped you out :dull: :dull:

hence my reason for this thread
