when is an xbox not an xbox?

When your 3 year old thinks its a tuppenny slot machine!

That's right, 2p in the disk drawer. Not even sure that opening it up will get me into the dvd drive to fish it out.

IIRC, opening it will reveal a sealed DVD tray, which can then be opened if you're confident enough. If not, I think it just uses a normal DVD drive, so they should be quite cheap to pick up off the internet and just swaap the unit. Although it'd be wise to check what is, and what isn't 360 compatible.

*Edit* all wrong!

Also, and I'm guessing you've considered this, opening it voids any warranty unless you heat up & remove the relevant stickers, which are all outlined on the internet.

When it's a jar B)

Oh poop - that's when is a door not a door

im sure if you swap the drive for a new one MS will see that the firmware is different from what its supposed to be, and your console will get banned from xbox live if you use it .

The drive is easy to strip down.

Just go to maplins, grab one of their tool kits for £10 for opening all consoles, whip it open, take 2p out. Bosh! :)

You cant swap the DVD drive, the drives firmware is tied to the motherboard firmware via a security certificate. Put in another drive and the machine will not work.

Take a hammer to the child and then the xbox.

I agree with the above: Just buy a kit and open the case up. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

That should do it, once apart the DVD looks just like a PC one.

What is to stop you buying another drive of the same make, reading the old firmware out bitwise and flashing it onto the new drive, serial numbers and all?

You don't need a tool. Some small screwdrivers will do the job just as well as long as you take your time.
