Using an external HDD as file back up

Featured Replies

Got an external HDD to back up files from our laptop and desktop. Although it's easy to just copy important files, things like the pics/music/documents folders change and update.

Does Vista, or any shareware software have the facility to "watch" specific folders and back-up any changes rather than me deleting then re-copying entire folders just to capture a few changes?

Cheers.

In Win 7 there is back and restore in the CP

I think that was on vista as well

Hang on I'll check now

Yep its there

Just use the wizard should be easy

Never used it meself:thumbup:

Just had a look and it look to be for an image file rather than what your after

Did the hdd come with software for back ups ??

Good point - I haven't checked the HDD for any software. But I can always try Vista too - thanks for the advice.

Will try this myself, sounds useful!

Just used the backup in Windows 7 to create a system image of my netbook onto an old 200GB desktop HDD in an enclosure. Then burnt a recovery disc on my pc so if it all goes t*t's up I can restore and get it going again.

Its a very useful tool.. its powerful and can sync both ways if required.

FBackup is a freeware solution that would satisfy your needs.

You choose what folders you want to backup. The first backup will then backup all the locations you have chosen.

Subsequent backups will only backup newer files and it can also be set to remove deleted source files. This is known as a mirror backup.

This is the program i use and it also has various plugins that can be installed to backup various other things.
