1.2 TSI SE hatch... anything we should be aware of before ordering?

Featured Replies

I've managed to convince the missus to get a Fabia while the VAT offer is on. We've settled on a 1.2 TSI (86bhp) SE hatch, probably in Aqua. I've heard that this engine only performs at it's best with 98 RON fuel, although I'm sure the fuel flap on the demonstrator we had at the weekend said 95 RON, although I could be wrong. Can anyone confirm if this engine is designed for 98 RON.

Is there anything else we should be aware of before ordering the Fabia? Other than the metallic paint, the only other options I might push for them to throw in are the under seat storage boxes.

I'm guessing current lead times are in the region of 12 weeks, so we'll be timing the order with a view to it being an 11 plate :)

Make sure you check the oil level after 1500 miles or so - my 105 used 600ml of oil in that mileage.

It will run on 95 RON, I made the mistake of running it initially on Tesco 99 RON and it really didn`t like it. I would advise against using that. Don`t expect the fuel economy to initally be as good as Skoda claim - mine is about 20mpg off Skoda`s claimed 53mpg.

Other than that, even if the dealer says it doesnt need running in , it specifically says in the handbook that you should avoid going over 2/3 of max revs for the first 1000 miles and not to go to the redline in the gears over the same mileage.

How do you know it didn't like the Tesco 99 - anything obvious?

Only ask 'cos that's what I'm using at the minute and since it is the first tank I have nothing to compare it to!

No issues in particular. The engine runs fine on 95 RON, don't worry about that too much. It will be a bit better on 98, but nothing bad is happening to mine after 4500 miles :)

I am able to get 41mpg on a short commute and I have seen 50mpg average on a long motorway trip, so it can be very economical when you want it to be. Enjoy the car

Didn`t idle that smoothly, could be a bit hesitant to rev up and felt strained after a few tankfuls. Put ordinary BP 95 in it and after two tanks it totally changed the car, made it idle much easier, revved up smoother and faster and (oddly enough) even driving it exactly the same way I got 6mpg more!

Have tried it on Tesco 99 a few times since and after a few tank fulls it does start to feel a bit reluctant again so have stopped using it completely now.

I have done 2500 miles in mine and she runs like a dream and on 95 RON. The clock on the dash say's i am averaging around 37-45 mpg depends if the wife drives or me and she does have a lead right foot.

You should be aware that the vRS is also on VAT free discount and order this instead, much better! B)

That's interesting, I put BP fuel in the demonstrator we had and that ran great too :)

You know it makes sense... and I know it makes sense... but this is the missus we're talking about here... mind you, she did have an Audi 80 Avant 2.6 V6 quattro once, so there's hope yet

VRS!! You know it makes sense, I know it makes sense. I bought one. But once my missus had driven it she really knew it made sense, and I barely saw it again!

She used to drive a 3litre auto Signum that went like stink (in straight lines) leaving twin jet-trails of diesel smoke when the turbos were spooled up. It was flawed but grin-worthy. But recently she had lost interest in car stuff.

The VRS has re-awakened the sleeping petrol-head within her just as it has with me. I have now had to buy her another interesting motor just to keep her thieving hands off mine!

Actually besides the pace, handling and the autobox, another thing she really really likes is the hill-holder. You may want to consider this as an option, or as a solid reason for choosing the VRS as its standard equipment!

You're absolutely right, of course you are, but them she only does 5,000 miles a year so it would be wasted on her (although it would be incredible fun). So, the SE it is... I'll have to make do with playing with all the buttons in my Superb, when it eventually arrives ;)

Have you ordered it yet? If you haven't then the only option I would make sure I had was a spare wheel. I know it sounds daft, but I believe non-vRS s only come with a compressor/can and Tyre Goo, you have to pay extra for a wheel.

I have a Diesel SE Estate and I ordered the underseat storage boxes and are okay but not massively big! I keep a pack of baby wipes in them along witha a scraper/squeegee. The others empty. I also ordered front fog lights which I think finish the front of the car off. They arent directional ones but do include DRLs......not bad for 120 odd quid.

Also got mud flaps and door protectors

That would be true - amd I would say to check the trye repair kit is in the boot - was missing in my car so had to get one out of one of the cars in the showroom!

I have just taken mine on the motorway for the first time since owning it and it was great, 80mph at 3000 revs was lovely and wanted to go more but i was comfortable at 80mph.

Thanks for the continued replies and the heads up regarding the under seat storage boxes... might still opt for them though, not sure. As for the spare wheel, I'm not really sure of the benefits, unless the repair kits have a proven history of being ineffective, other than having to get the wheel repaired asap. Definitely thinking of mud flaps, but perhaps not the door protectors... the missus is pretty good at watching the doors when opening and they never line up with other cars to protect the doors from other people!

If you any sort of distance driving the tyre repair kit will come back to hurt you when your standing at the side of a road in the rain at night with a damaged tyre that these stupid kits won't fix. Having had to wait two hours for the AA man to come and pick up a honda accord with one of these kits after the tyre decieded to give out at the side wall I was one of the first things I would suggest people spec to any car. Also take a long term view how many times have you had to replace a spare tyre in a car and how much did it cost, because these kits are one use and bin and are far from cheap. Not to mention you'll be charged more for your new tyre as the garage has to clean all that lovely pva glue like substance from the wheel itself.

Hmm, I didn't really think of a damaged tyre... time to start negotiations with the dealer...! I'll have to look into a spare wheel kit for my Superb too, although that's already on order, there must be other places to get everything other than the dealer...?

just depositid on a fabia se dsg

we are getting rid of a grand scenic .

but ordered a spare in place of glue

reason is

we were out and got a slow puncture near a quick fit

thought just get the punture repaired bad choice

lad came back with the tyre said after preping for repair

sorry mate these two are too close together new tyre required

gave us two choices £160 or £159 which tyre do you want

rock and hard place cant go anywhere else no tyre

paid up

would never have glue system again

as said speced the new one with a spare would prefer a full wheel though
