Cold Air Intakes, And Induction Kits Etc

From reading on Vortex it seams that oil damage to MAF is an urban legend.

The MAF has no exposed parts that can be damaged by oil and Kn has done

tests that prove that.

There is a big restriction in the MAF in form of flow streightining plastic mesh,

if you remove this you get another 5 Hp. This can only be done if there is a

pipe of at least 20 cm in front of the MAF.

hi eric..

why 20cm? how does this make a difference?

Perhaps the 20cm might be the distance required to provide a clean/turbulence free flow of air pre-MAF?

Is this for real.

only one way to find out...

Oh no, I can see him reaching for the Dremmel from here :D

Well ffelan if nothing else your car should be faster with all these bits you've cut out it weighs less. :D

Paul

Can you provide some links to the threads in VWVortex about the MAF oil myth (don't try and say that out loud quickly)? I had been following the debate on a number of forums for interest only and the conclusions I read were that oiled K&N filters did cause MAF damage.

K&N may well have done some tests, but in the final analysis they do not have any responsibilty for replacing the MAF if they are wrong. I recall reading some reports where people had fitted a K&N and were out of pocket by the price of the K&N filter and a new MAF in the end.

I must confess to not being convinced either on the oiled filter, hence I ain't got one

Dunno never been on Vortex - have heard of similar probs on the Scooby side of things... my mate simon is on his third maf and has gone back to std airbox with non oiled element - no maf faliure since (on his Scooby) im sure Disco would shed further light on this... AFAIK oiled elements come from carb fed big v8's and it would seem a little "old fashioned" to need it on a modern electronically controlled engine...

BTW

the k+n element included with the neuspeed kit does not appear to be oiled.

im still working on getting better cool are to it..

any thoughts on drilling out the inner wing?

Don't know if this has been posted before if so I can only apologize but the site has some interesting facts on the MAF sensor and more....hope this works.

Cheers for the link - im more thana little intrigued to see how changing the stereo affects the odb port? unless wired by a gypsy?

Read this link, Paul. There really is a problem and it is a very expensive one for dealers if they plug their VAG1551 into a car which has not had the replacement radio wired up correctly so that it can't b****r their VAG1551.

I originally asked ffelan (Paul) this, but should have directed the quesion at you.

I'd read the same Denis, but having read the MAF manual and hearing K&N refuting this claim all I can conclude is that if you over oil the filter it may cause damage. Being the ham fisted type, I don't trust myself to get one.

This link shows the difference in airflow with and without the screen. Lots of other good mods by ttschwing there too.

I didn't find the tread I was looking for about oil and MAF but this

has some info.

looks a tempting mod.. but i havent enought pipe between my filter and the maf. nor enough room to move it.

thanks Eric...

Spotted this today, all i can say is this pic does not do this filter justice, this is without doubt the best cold air filter I have ever seen.

Wow, that does look like sex on a stick  Is this a direct replacement or additional to the current one (yes, you guessed it, I'm clueless on these things) ?
