F1 in HD at long last! and amputated Leg!

Featured Replies

Even if not HD, watching on BBC one HD (Sky 143) should be a massive improvement in picture quality to the bandwidth starved BBC 1 (101). Just checked my planner and both the live and repeat are showing as SD. The BBC are being provided with a HD feed, so maybe they are using it as the source but only transmitting SD for technical reasons.

My planner shows HD??

Shame Jonathan Legard is missing...it was like two anoraks talking to each other today. Bring back the radio inspired commentary..."the blue skies over the water" and the other nice things he had to say about Albert Park rather than just straight in to the technophobe mode like DC and MB are.

I love MB but it was interesting to notice that he missed a few things that DC picked up. This will no doubt be mainly because he now has a lot more to do than just sit back and summarise a he did before. Overall i thought the combination worked quite well, although they never pause for breath.

What I didn't like though, was the stupid graphic of track position that dominates the left hand side of the screen and cuts through the picture. This is displayed at this weird point for the 4:3 viewers and the cameramen/women will be aware of the positioning of it and therefore should compensate their shot to avoid the graphic cutting through the picture. But it looks like they forget to give the viewing room required when the going gets exciting :(

The other odd thing was I recorded it off Freeview's BBC 1 HD and SKYs BBC 1 HD (accidently :D ) but the SKY picture was noticeably sharper by a fair degree. The difference between the two platforms isn't usually so great, it made me wonder if Freeview was outputting an SD signal. Bit surprised really, but as SKY's planner will keep forgetting to record the race if it doesn't fall within a week of it's EPG I guess that Freeview will have to be my mainstay :(

Still it was nice to have it back on air :)

I really like the Radio 5 commentary during the practice sessions on the Red button. Much more fun :)

My planner shows HD??

Is that on SkyHD or Freesat or Virgin?? On our SkyHD guide the quali shows in HD but the race itself shows as SD. I even checked the actual programme info rather than just relying on the fact the program wasn't highlighted in orange in the guide etc...

Cheers

Dave.

SKY HD. But the interesting thing is I also recorded it on Freeview HD and the difference was quite marked. Freeview looked mush more like a good SD Tx. I haven't seen such a big difference between the two before. SKY looked good, but the broadcasters were drowned a bit by the FX mix :(

Ah, I see your point re the Sunday show. I had assumed the race would be the same as the quali. I still think it will be in HD as they have been advertising it as such. Perhaps it's a hangover on the EPG from when the show was SD?

Well even though it didn't advertise the fact, it was in HD after all :)
