F1 in HD at long last! and amputated Leg!

Featured Replies

The up coming season will at long last be broadcast in HD!! about bloody time! Better still they have seen sense and amputated Legard! I've got some reservations about Coulthard though as a full on commentator...... hopefully though he'll shine and prove me wrong. Can't be worse than Legard anyway..... Could provide some great insight during the race.

A very big secret then, as bbc one hd only launched Nov 3rd in the UK, and the f1 wasn't broadcast in hd on it......... It may have been being broadcast in hd elsewhere in the world, but i don't think it was on the beeb....

About five or six races from the end of the season, on the saturday after the quali it said dont forget the grand prix itself at whatever the time was on the bbc.... and in hd!!..Bonus I thought and tuned into bbc hd (not bbc1 hd) and couldnt find it. Rang sky and gave out yards and they said yep its on bbc1 hd and not bbc hd (2 diff channels) and no the new bbc1 hd channel wasnt being put on the irish platform!!....so according to them and the beeb saying it was in hd...but i dont know if it actually was as i couldnt see it anyway!! :)

Thank god Legard's gone, he was dreadful!

I wonder if Brundle will still be doing his grid walks, now that he's chief commentator?

Good news regarding HD too, though BBC's squeeze on HD bandwidth means it probably won't be as good as it could be.

Starting to look forward to the new season now.

It was upscaled from the SD broadcast. A bit better than SD, but proper HD will be even better than that.

I just wish the BBC would transmit a full HD signal, for some reason they have chosen not to transmit at 1920x1080 but instead have opted for 1440x1080, so you are losing nearly 500 columns of picture.

Good news to see F1 in HD, but BBC HD is not the same quality it once was. Apparently for fast moving live sport the current bitrate will push the encoders to the limit. I guess we will still see macroblocking and compression artifacts as the encoders struggle to cope with the live transmission.

Good to see Leggard go but hope Coulthard isn't sat there singing Red Bulls praises constantly during every race!!!!

About time Bernie went HD after all WTC and superbikes have been in HD for a while now along with NASCAR.

Cheers

Dave.

I was surprised that the beeb kept Legard on for a second season. He was OK on the radio, but never really made the transition to TV.

Im chuffed about this too.

Marvellous cars thundering around a oval track at break kneck speeds, and it needed HD to get everyone on the edge of there seats? :D

Ahh i see...well that explains it then :)....But we still wont get it over here though!! :(

Any idea who will take over from leggard? He truely was pants!!...the guy they had before him, the one who does lots of racing programs, he was good.

I think they should have James Allan, he loves the sport and im not sure if having 2 drivers commentating will work. Brundle has been an exception really.

And yeh, coultard winding EJ up was effing funny. Infact the 3 of them (the tall get) had me in stiches at times. I wouldnt miss any of them individually but as a team, stood in the pits talking ****e and taking the p155 out of each other was class.

Not sure about James Allen , he was a bit misinformed at times, but deffo less annoying than Legard was :giggle:

Can't wait for the new season to start, shame I wont get it in HD.

Testings just started with most of the new cars launced =]

But none will ever match the Murray/Hunt combo. Murray in a stupour, and Hunt just taking his antics in his stride and correcting him. those were the days.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just set the HD box to record the GP on Sunday morning and the TV Guide shows the programme as not being in HD....emoticon-0149-no.gif

Unsure whether it's Sky that have put the wrong info onto the TV Guide or if it is only upscaled. I've just tweeted Jake Humphreys to see if he knows any more about it.

Cheers

I used to work on the F1 TV coverage and when we lost it to Bernie's mob, we were disappointed to see he was using inferior equipment, probably to save costs. I am guessing he has almost caught up with the rest of the world now.

It is also sad that the BBC may lose the F1 to ITV again, when this contract ends; they will have to make a decision to keep either Wimbledon or the F1 I fear.

I get 3 weeks worth of work out of the tennis. Please let them ditch F1 Please let them ditch.....oh hang on a mo, it would have adverts again. please Santa give the BBC some free money, please Santa....

But at least advert breaks would fit into tennis easily without any loss of action..... same as cricket. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I don't think ITV will ever get the F1 again. It would ruin the sports coverage (as it did last time imho).

It will be highly frustrating having to watch it with adverts :( :(

It seems they are very keen again and BBC Sport is skint :(

Even if not HD, watching on BBC one HD (Sky 143) should be a massive improvement in picture quality to the bandwidth starved BBC 1 (101). Just checked my planner and both the live and repeat are showing as SD. The BBC are being provided with a HD feed, so maybe they are using it as the source but only transmitting SD for technical reasons.
