Fabia HTP Loan Car

Featured Replies

Just picked up a 500 mile Fabia HTP loan car from Gordon Lamb. Impressively equipped and spacious ,even compared to my Octavia. And mpg around town , from cold, was excellent at 39.

Overall on my 25 mile commute it registered 42mpg.

A nice little car, decent performance, comfortable ride with high profile tyres and so much nicer overall than a Corsa I had last year.

But what engine does the HTP have and is it no longer on sale (not in latest brochure)?

It's still available in the Fabia but it isn't listed as a HTP just a 6v or a 12v engine.

You should try a TSi Fabia!

It'll be a 1.2L petrol - couple of different versions (6v 60ps or 12v 70ps). Much more fun to drive than the stats suggest and proving quite economical for me too (12v version). It's still available according to the Skoda website.

It's 51kW from the build label under the boot carpet.

I note that the tax disc says £00.00. However the DVLA tax calculator reckons it should be £140.00.

Not my car but curious why this should be.

Tax is 'free' for first year!

it's slow isn't it compared to your octavia 2.0 tdi

Oh yush.

But perfectly acceptable for a gentle commute. Much nicer to drive than the more powerful 1.2l Corsa 'slug' I had on loan last year.

Just waiting for the telephone call from Gordon Lamb

The 1.2L 80ps Corsa (the new one) is the most underpowered bucket I've ever driven. It may have 80ps but lacks good torque delivery. I had one for 4 days just before Christmas and it was such a pain, no hill climbing power, no acceleration, poor cruising speed and it noticed the hills. Fuel consumption was constantly in the region of 32-34mpg around my usual haunts (my diesel Fabia does 53-56mpg in the same circumstances). The Corsa is just a terrible car compared to the 1.2 3cylinder 70ps Fabia which is a delight to drive, plenty of power and loads of acceleration, good economy unless pushed very hard and just a very good car. Sorry if I've insulted any Corsa owners, but just doesn't compare to the Skoda 1.2 petrol.

There isnt a 1.2 out there that compares to the HTP engine, it just has bags of torque. All the other 1.2s are either gutless or need so many revs it ridiculous. On my commute I average around 45mpg, thats a 13 mile trip with mixed driving. Its easy to get over 50mpg but also if you push them its very easy to get low 30s so you have to watch your right foot! Those figures are based on actual fill ups and not the trip computer as I find it reads around 3 to 4mpg high, so a reading of say 45mpg really is about 42mpg.

I managed 44 mpg on my first tank which included 260 miles of motorway and 100 mile of horrid urban...I say horrid because that's my daily commute from Rotherham to the other side of Sheffield which although only about 11 miles can take from 25 - 55 minutes depending on traffic. Second tank I got 35mpg - but this was 300 miles of commuting with not much else.... this is a 40% improvement (if not more) on my previous 1.6 petrol which had way less torque (at least seemingly - not checked the figures) and consequently much less fun to drive. Really starting to get the hang of this engine now and if driven right it has a great ability to get a hustle on (without needing to floor it) when needed ie going from 20-40mph to make progress through town B) . Obviously it's no vRS or GTi - but for what it is I'm not sure there is much out there to beat the price/performance/economy/fun factor

I agree with every word of that. I came from a BMW 2.8i SE close on 150mph and a delight on motorways but I just love the little 70 HTP and it is such fun to drive in town. Yes I agree too the fuel consumption isn't the best if you push it but hey, this little car is so cheap in every other way. Servicing is easy and no cam belt issues. There's little if anything to go wrong and although the Tsi is a much quicker and more responsive engine, the little HTP gets it all done without the fuss or other issues. I love mine as I've said many times and am so glad I bought it.

Had one as a loan car whilst the octavia was having some warrenty work carried out. Was very impressed with it. Both in performance and the mpg returned. More pokey than expected for a 1.2

Its just a shame they make that weird rattly/ticking sound when accelerating. The demo I drove did it and when I hear other HTPs they are all ticking away merrily like Chrysler Alpines :giggle:

... and Solaras and Horizons. I used to sell'em.

It's not the engine that's the problem with these, it's the gearboxes...they use long ratios so that once up to speed it will sit at lower revs, the drawback of this being that you have to sit with your foot to the floor (and thus using loads of fuel) to get up to speed in the first place.

And then as soon as you're up to speed, someone pulls out in front of you forcing you to slow down, forcing you to repeat the process - and overall poor fuel economy...

I'd take the Fiat 1.2 over the Skoda 1.2 myself.

So...Apart from the Ticking noses, The gearbox and the hilariously styled Fiat Panda they're not too bad. I really do wonder sometimes as mine doesn't 'tick' rhough it has the 3 pot box which always sounds different, you like it or you don't. The gearbox is fine. It takes 14 secs or so to hit 62 and if you want to floor it to try to get better a) you won't and B) thats how you use fuel. and finally the Panda is a great little car that is visually a silly box on wheels plus it's a FIAT!! 'nuff said. ....I just set my trip to zero and went into Mablethorpe and back, one of the most twisty roads in the country with plenty of villages and a half mile of roadworks Clock reads 38.7 miles and 41.5 mpg.

Excellent...what more could you want eh!

Ive owned Fiat 1.2s, they arent a patch on the 3 Pot Skoda lump

Does anyone actually know what the ticking sound is on the HTPs....

Never actually noticed a ticking sound on mine??

Maybe its just that somebody lost their watch and you picked up on the underside of the car :giggle: Other than that, has anyone else got a ticking sound on theirs as I certainly haven't on mine.

I would liken my engine to look more like a sewing machine as it's so small, but it's certainly got similar engines from the competition stitched up when it comes to performance!

No ticking sound on ours - just a (quite) pleasant raspy note....

Mines always been noisy, sort of tapping sound from low revs.... you really only hear it with the window open but Ive heard it on others. Maybe they are all busted?

Maybe ALL the best 1.2 engines tick..

Thatll be it then :giggle: if you really use the performance you dont hear it, only seems to be there when driving normally through the lower gears.

To be honest mate, I think it's just the three pot engine, you've heard the old joke, "what goes 99 clomp?...a centipede with a wooden leg" Well, the 3 pot is the same but doesn't have the wooden leg so it clicks not clomps. :giggle:
