Do not think it matters much in compression ignition engines ie diesels. Interesting thread recently saying winter diesel is a bit rubbish as they add the anti coagulant to it and the diesel gets better on March when they stop adding it. We had temperatures of -19C in Worcester so I am gld they do add this in the UK. Also threads saying that engines and the car runs better in the warmer weather too. The diesel was better than the petrol in the bad weather with its better weight over front wheels and slightly skinner tyres. Buy cheapest non supermarket most people say thought I do use Tescos much of the time but they did have a big problem a year or 2 ago with quality. Shell best ie V power then BP etc but not generally worth 5 p a litre more either

I personally always run my vrs on v power and millers.

A long time ago I posted in another thread an answer from the RAC saying all standard diesel was the same no matter where you buy it, if you want better fuel buy the premium brand fuel - of course the premium brand fuel can be interpreted in two ways.

Raisbeck reckons the Shell fuelsaver (the fuel I use) he put in his Greenline is better than the BP fuel he usually uses and will probably be switching to the Shell fuel.

At the moment I am using Shell fuelsaver it's the same price as the supermarket standard diesel. I did try the shell Vpower and my car did not seem to be any different except for my pocket, I might try two tank fills in the summer and see.

Until the engine is nearly run in you cannot tell if the change in fuel is worth it. For me it's use standard diesel until the engine has done 5000 miles, the last one only lasted 2000, then I might start to try different fuel and see what happens.

I ran V power diesel in three different vehicles for a month/2000 miles.

No noticable power or economy benefits that I could see.

But the fuel bill went up.

Would I use again?

No.

I have to see I can see the point of V Power in petrol but not diesel.

I think for a normal diesel car V-power diesel will not make much difference. It will only make you wallet lighter. :giggle:

I have read that Fuel save diesel actually has more Cetane (diesel equivalent of Octane) than V-power. So you might as well just use the ordinary stuff.

I will stay on the regular diesel from shell then:thumbup:

Just to clarify. I only ever had BP Ultimate in my car for 1 tank. Made no difference and mpg no different. For my cars 17000 miles from new its pretty much only ever had Esso standard fuel. As reported by others the mpg went down a bit in cold weather and due to winter diesel.

I just happened to fill up with Shell fuelsave (Shells standard fuel) as I was on fumes one day due to poor planning on my part. I expected no difference at all but was pleasantly surprised to find more torque available at low revs and a quieter idle. Its also a bit smoother. MPG is now almost back up to summer figures. This isnt placebo, for some obscure reason my car likes the taste of Shell. I plan to continue using it as its no different in price to most other places.

Call me a snob, I wont use supermarket diesel. I do know that all diesel base stock is the same from the same refineries. The difference is the additive pack. My car likes Shell and who am I to argue with it :p

I surprised myself with this difference between Esso and Shell. I wont bother with the V power or Ultimate. Not worth it imo as fuelsaver is marketed as having higher cetane and fuel system cleaners..........mind you the up to 7% biodiesel in all fuel makes for an excellent lubricant and fuel cleaner anyway.

To ease any confusion there now follows a highly technical and probably inaccurate description of Octane and Cetane :notme:

Cetane= how quickly it goes bang from when its injected

Octane =how resistant it is to going bang

High cetane is good for diesel as it burns more thoroughly. High octane is good for petrol as its reduces pre-ignition and knocking, a smoother burn rather than a bang !

Edited to squeeze this extra bit in.......the fuelsave fuel also makes my regens harder to spot. Its much quieter when it regens and takes less time to complete. Of course all you non DPF drivers out there couldnt care less about that

Raisbeck, got it wrong again third time lucky.

Reckon you do it on purpose to make me post.........

Ive run mine on Esso, BP but mainly Shell and mpg has improved with mileage. Got 3600 on clock now and can get 58-60 fairly easily on a decent run.

Havent tried Tesco etc....Incidentally local BP garage is now 135.9p for a litre of DERV!! Costilest Ive ever seen it.

Paid 132ish for Shell @ J11 M20. Same price as Tesco @ J10

Anywhere.

Grahame

The super duper diesel from Shell and BP is anything up to 10p a litre more than the cooking stuff around here. This is way too expensive even if I could save 1l per tankful as I think Shell state.
