Cornering lights ...

Featured Replies

Hi Folks I'm in overload mode searching for anything I can find about Octavia Estate, 1.6 TDI, Elegance trim and DSG.

Have just come across an interesting link to a post on You Tube about cornering lights, I haven't heard them mentioned on here, and they're not mentioned in the brochure. The function seams to activate the appropriate front log light, I've experienced cornering lights in my mates VW Phaeton, they are a nice touch. Just wondering are they one of these extra features that become accessible with the maxi-dot display? The clip on YT shows a UK '59 reg car being manoeuvred sharply on roads in an industrial estate to demonstrate the feature.

Anyone experienced this feature?

Cheers ..

It needs someone with VCDS to turn it on.

I've got it and like it but some others don't seem to care for it. :|

sounds like the bending/dynamic function of the xenon headlamps.

thats totally different to cornering lights.

cornering lights (i.e. foglight assist) only works when turning at very low speeds.

As has been said, you can't activate the fog/cornering lights via maxidot - you need vcds.

I've had it activated on my car for a couple of months now - its good, but its not a massive difference IMO.

I also have the xenons with the feature that swivels the beam as you turn a corner. I really notice the difference when I drive SWMBO's car with halogens and a fixed "straight-ahead" beam. This makes more difference IMO than the fog lights.

HTH.

Sorry, new to some of the terminology, in this case VCDS?

Does that mean it is something I can ask the dealer to activate prior to delivery?

Thanks

VCDS, formerly known as Vag-Com, is the diagnostic software for all VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda cars. Yes, your dealer will have it & should be able to do it if they're any good, otherwise lots of members have it-look in the VCDS section of the site for an owners map.

VCDS can be used to log faults, but also to 'recode', for aftermarket HID lights for example, & also to activate features 'hidden' in the cars electronics, such as the aforementioned cornering fogs.

HTH!

Wife has them on her Ibiza. I think they look silly IMHO and I've seen no benefit to having them.

Yes you can ask, but my experience with asking the dealer was not very successful!

I got a local chap who had a laptop and the right software to do it for me where the dealer had failed - took about 30 seconds to do..

I've thought about activating mine but every car that I've seen with them on makes me think that there's a wiring fault or a bulb gone and they've left their fogs on

IMO they are very handy, I've had them for about the last two years.

Good for sharp, low speed corners like the one at the end of my road. Handy for lighting up the kerb when manoeuvring.

Some people like them, some don't. Such is life.

When you look at all the people who want to upgrade from halogens to HIDS or xenons - in other words people who just want to get more light, then I can't understand why people don't like cornering fogs. :S

Maybe the same people who don't like them also drive around with just sidelights on? :p

You look like a chav with them activated.

I don't care, I find them very useful turning onto our unilluminated drive in the depths of a dark Scottish winter. Let there be light!

IMHO They look silly aswell you see people going round roundabouts or turning at traffic lights and you instantly think its some muppet driving with his fog lights on but one of them has broke :giggle:

First thing i did with my VCDS was turn them of when i got my leon, Im also want to question the Legality of these? Driving with Fog Lights on is Illegal unless its foggy so surely these are illegal because your driving with One Fog light illuminated?

Just my 2p

Looks like albutch fell straight into your carefully laid trap there bluvrs2! :giggle:

However, as he's got a Roomster then he can't really be called a chav can he?

Plus, as he lives in the Scottish winter 'permanight', he will benefit more than the 'urban' people on here.

I've known there to be less controversy when deposing monarchs! :p

So will you get a £30 fine and 1.5 points then??!! :giggle:

:D I didn't so much fall as jump.

No chavs up here.

I'm in the 'what's the point?' camp. I've tried them but didn't see (literally) what benefits they offered. Foglight assist is one thing, adaptive headlights is quite another.

ur not "driving with foglights", unless ofcourse u plan on continuously driving in circles at low speed!!!

it will only turn on while taking a corner at low speed. and then turn off as soon as the wheels r straightened or the speed is increased!!!

its not going to remain on at all speeds or during turning maneuvers!!

jeez - u drive with drls, n the dumb idiots think ur tool for driving with high beams, or foglights (in the case of non-vrs) on; u drive with cornering foglight, they think u have a blown foglight and a tool; u drive with static cornering, they think u've got high beams on just the one side!!!

so hard to make people happy these days?!?!

Or continuously reversing as they'll both be on then. B)

These are a 'marmite' thing. You either love em or hate em. I personally don't like them as the 'extra' light they offer are minimal. I can manage to negotiate any corner, parking etc quite easily without em. The light from my headlight is more than enough to see the road.

On continuously reversing as they'll both on then. B)

Is that true?

I can't see how that makes any sense at all. :wonder:

Why would you need extra illumination at the front when reversing?

Edit: Also, and probably a minor point, but does this not significantly affect bulb life? Having them quickly switching on and off all time?

It's certainly is true - that's why I wrote it lol. :giggle:

It's probably a 'nanny' thing having them both on when reversing but assists if the front end needs to be watched as you're turning? :S

As for bulb life - if you don't want it impaired at all - just drive during the day and don't brake or indicate. Seriously though, I've not had to change any bulbs in either of the vRS's that I've had whereas the 407 used to kill headlight bulbs with regularity.

And also the increased power consumption of such lights, along with DRLs. And they're trying to cut CO2 emissions!

Dreadful.

I really do not see the point in these cornering fog lights TBH
