Fan running after switch off

Featured Replies

A little worry bead has started rattling about in my head. Perhaps someone can bring it to a rest. The last two times I have switched of the engine ( 140 Diesel manual ) the cooling fan has continued to run full speed for a couple of minutes. The outside air temperature is still only a couple of degrees and water temperature seems normal. I haven't noticed it doing it in the previous 4000 miles. I know this is not necessarily abnormal but is this the beginning of a know issue?

I believe its part of the DPF regeneration process, and therefore nothing to worry about.

Keep your fingers out of the engine bay until it has all cooled downemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

DPF regen occurs rarely on a car that is motoring in the open countryside but more often in one that is trapped in suburbia. It is usually accompanied by a foul smell from under the car (burning rubber) and fans running overtime.

Thanks Terfyn.

That reminds me, I forgot to mention that there was a wiff of burning rubber but as I had just parked up next to several people arriving for work I wasn't sure if it was from my car.

Worry bead has now stopped rolling.

Thanks Manny. Worry over.

I have had this happen a few times. Last week it kept on happening every time I stopped Elsie, so I took her down the A3 in 4th gear at 50mph to the M25, round to leatherhead and enjoyed myself on the back lanes coming home. I drive lots around South London.

It was only a week previously that I did a 420 mile motorway journey in one day, and used as much as possible the extra power and torque, but staying within the speed limits.

It seems that it doesn't take much driving around London to cause regeneration.

Keeping a diesel over 2000rpm is not easy, even at motorway speeds .....
