Chipping a 170 Yeti?

Featured Replies

Having followed Mike's brave pioneering tale, and his subsequent responses to the inevitable questions from the rest of us on this Forum, I could be intrigued to know what the expected outcome would be if a 170 bhp were to be subjected to open heart surgery?

I did a brief calculation which scared the proverbial out of me, and pointed to a 0-60 time to rival anything Top Gear gets excited about.

Are there any figures available?

You must be barking George :giggle:

where you going to find room on those Welsh lanes to do Mach 1 and not be in danger of hitting sheep and sheep dogs

The Monster equivalent of Colonel Steve Austin springs to mind :D

I was also doing the pioneering trail for my 1.4 with Shark as well, but my ecu couldn't be remapped because of a second layer of write protection on the very latest ecu that is on my Yeti. I think your 170 may be okay. Should be one heck of a beast after.

The CR170 is usually good to be remapped to 200-205bhp with a moderate increase in torque. I actually had 205+bhp out of my very healthy PD170 Octavia vRS. The engine has potential for much more but tuners in general err on the side of caution as they don't want to compromise the operation of the DPF.

This can be negated by having the DPF removed (one way or another) and then the PD/CR engine is good for an easy 215-220bhp (some say more but be wary) and lots more torque; without other mechanical mods.

I won't bother speculating on the improvements against a stopwatch, apart from suggesting :o;):)

remapped cr 170 in two wheel drive form is good for sub 7 seconds! :D

Ben at Shark has done several CR170's.

Go on, give him a ring, you know you want to.....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

You won't be disappointed.

Tempting.........

Andy

I would also be tempted to have remap and dpf removed, but I am concerned about the new mot which mentions "illegal engine modifications"

Can anyone convince me I have nothing to worry about?

I repeat my mantra......Speak to Ben at Shark......emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What 'new MOT'?

+ 1. The best remap I've ever had by far and with zero downsides!

What 'new MOT'?

There has been a scare story doing the rounds that amongst the changes coming up with the MOT, one of the things that would/could result in a fail was a tampered with ECU, but VOSA have issued a refutal of this, because at present they have no way of actually checking or testing this.

That's good to know; DPF removal - here I come ... !! ;)

PS> I googled this subject last night and all I could come up with was a story from 2006 that by 2010 we would fall in line with the EU and have an MOT only every two years, not annually. Hmmm .......

This all sounds very interesting, I assume you guys have amended your insurance policy to show the modification, can anybody clarify what sort of premium increase I could expect, also how does it affect the fuel consumption and co2 output which somebody told me is checked at MOT time.

Cheers.

But of course to insurance. I paid an extra 10%. (seeing as I work in the insurance industry I have to)

it affects fuel consumption. It has improved....

Co2 not affected as far as I'm aware, Ben wouldn't remap a vehicle with a map that wouldn't pass an MOT.....

Mike

Are these remaps you guys have done based on rolling road runs with readings of what the engine is doing, exhaust temp, charge pressure, etc... or is it "universal" maps believed to work well with your engine that is "hacked" into your engines ECU?

It's more like overclocking then hacking :giggle:

Ben at Shark modifies each car map individually. No two cars are the same. No two maps are the same. Most of the time I was at Shark was waiting for the programmer to write the new map.

Did you see my thread about what he did? My link

I will be attending a RR day next sunday, so will see what it is producing, but unless a standard car runs for comparison sake then who knows...

Mike

I'm glad to hear that the maps are unique to each car  And yes I did read the thread where Ben remapped your car.. I think that looked like a very "axe and hacksaw" way of programming the ECU, but I know NOTHING about this, so I'm just curious

When we update software on new cars at work we do it via the diagnostic port, and it surprises me that the "tuners" haven't figured out how to do this on the "encrypted" ECU's yet..

Theives and people making money on modifiing software usually adapt pretty fast to the barriers put there by the manufacturers... I'm NOT calling Ben a theif, in contrary I'm impressed of what some people can do without factory support and back-up solutions.

JonA - go read

It is a continuous tussle between manufacturers and tuners, with manufacturers adding more and more levels of encryption to stop tuners accessing the redundant performance liberated by remapping. The latest ecus are mostly only able to be remapped by bench flashing and some cars , like mine, have another level built in on top of the ones that can be mapped in that way.

Yes, the tuners will find a way round these things eventually, as they are a clever and resouceful bunch, but as I understand it, nobody out there can do the latest ecus through the diagnostic port unless they don't have the protection built into the ecu.

Yes, they have to use tools to open ecus, as its not a magic process, but certainly not "axe and hacksaw" stuff.

Thanks! I did learn something from reading that

Thanks for that link. I have read the post with great interest, there is just one thing that troubles me about having this modification - the sentence - "Unauthorised modifications (like us)"
