VRS owners carry a Rubber mallet

Featured Replies

Just tried to get back wheels off both stuck on with corrosion, had to use rubber mallet to get them off. Car done 5k. EITHER THAT OR PRISE OFF THE CENTER CAP AND POUR IN SOME PLUS GAS.

If anybody is thinking of fitting 15" wheels they do go.

Smear the old copper grease on the hub faces B.M., it'll make them so much easier to take off next time.

Rubber mallet doesn't always work -on one of our company Golfs, it took two size 12's and two size 11's to shift one wheel!

It's a problem with all cars with alloy wheels. I think it's something to do with having two types of metal in a damp atmosphere, which causes corrosion. Copper grease usually helps.

15" wheels do go indeed - 15" GTI golf wheels came with my car, and with 195/50 R15 tyres it was more or less the same as normal. This pic was taken about 1 mile down the road from when I picked it up in Soctland.

Only 5k on the clock = AA cover

Why get your hands dirty:D

Indeed!

Fair point :D

What the hell do you want to put 15"'s on for?

DO NOT use copper grease.. Use heavy grease or silicone. Copper and alloy have superb electrolytic reactions with one another..Which willmake your wheel fizz away!!

Don't electrolytic reactions require electricity?

I've allways loosened the wheel bolts and rocked the car from side to side..

Before jacking the car up...

This usually breaks the bond between the hub and the alloy...

cheers

That's a novel way I'd never thought of

I've always undone the bolts about half a turn, Then drive the car about six feet back and forth. A couple of times later they go "Bang" as the corrosion lets go.
